Show Volume XV Issue XIV The Ogden Valley news Page July 1, 2008 BARGAINING EDEN cont. from page 1 GARAGE SALE cont. from page 1 ing, largely unreported story of Earl Holding and the Snowbasin land swap becomes, in Trimble’s heartfelt prose, a metaphor for the way land is used and abused in the West. But Stephen doesn’t stop with the exposé. He weaves it into a thoughtful and thought-provoking reverie on man’s place in an increasingly threatened landscape. We are all part of the problem. And, he writes hopefully, we can, with honest effort, become part of the solution.” memory of Elisabeth. She decided to have a garage sale and give the proceeds to Make-A-Wish. The first year, the garage sale was just for kids, and Elizabeth made $226 for Make-A-Wish. The garage sale grew each year, and Elizabeth and her younger sister Katie rose to the challenge. A few years later, other neighbors Dave and Julie Broderick lost an infant son, Jacob, to birth defect trisomy-18. McKay Dee Hospital’s Labor and Delivery Unit provided the Brodericks with some special memorabilia of Jacob to help them deal with the loss. In memory of Jacob, that summer Elizabeth and Katie added the Labor and Delivery departments of McKay-Dee and Ogden Regional as two more beneficiaries of the garage sale. That money is earmarked by the hospitals to help provide memory boxes, rings, stuffed animals, disposable cameras, gowns, etc. to families who have an infant that dies. A few more years passed, and McKenna Burton, infant daughter of Zach and Angie Burton and granddaughter of Rob and Colleen Burton, passed away a few hours after her birth. Her family received the same compassionate treatment from the hospital that the Brodericks did, and McKenna was added to the memory list. Last year, after Janine, Matthew, and Esther Howard of Huntsville died in a car accident, an additional donation was made to Primary Children’s Medical Center and the Howard Family Fund to help with medical expenses for Caleb Howard. About the Author Writer, photographer, and naturalist Stephen Trimble has won awards for his nonfiction, his fiction, and his photography, including the Ansel Adams Award from The Sierra Club. His books include The Sagebrush Ocean: A Natural History of the Great Basin; The People: Indians of the American Southwest; The Geography of Childhood: Why Children Need Wild Places (with Gary Nabhan), and Testimony: Writers of the West Speak on Behalf of Utah Wilderness (co-compiled with Terry Tempest Williams). Trimble will tell stories, show slides, and read from the book in a booksigning event to launch the book at the Salt Lake City Library on Thursday, July 10 at 7:00 p.m. Trimble’s book is now available in bookstores and online in hardcover for $29.95 (978-0-52025111-3). For more information, visit his website at <www.stephentrimble.net> For the first eight years, the Charity Garage Sale was organized by Elizabeth Stitt and her sister Katie. For the past year and a half, Elizabeth has been on an LDS Church mission to Curitiba, Brazil. A group of local women in the Valley want the tradition to continue so they organized the garage sale last year and this year, and plans are for it to continue indefinitely. For the past few years, the Charity Garage Sale has been able to fully sponsor a Make-A-Wish child. Costs have risen and this year it will cost $5,000 to grant a wish for a child. We hope to be able, again, to fulfill a wish for a child with a life-threatening illness, plus make the annual contributions to the hospitals. The garage sale will be held Friday, July 11 and Saturday, July 12, at 9520 E. 400 S. in Huntsville at the home of Mike and Cindy Hillstrom. It will run from 8:00 a.m. to about 8:00 p.m. on Friday, and until 3:00 p.m. on Saturday. The garage sale is made possible by donations of items, which are still being accepted and collected. Items already donated include furniture, sports equipment, clothing in great condition, shoes and boots, craft items, dishes, appliances, seasonal decorations, toys, games, and books. If you would like to support this great cause with your own donation, please contact Leslie Stitt at 745-4012 or 564-5137, Laurel Kirkham at 745-1483 or 710-2324, or Colleen Burton at 644-1002. And don’t forget to come and buy something too! Mark July 11 and 12 on your calendar, and follow the signs to a great sale for four great causes! Gage Froerer & Assoc.
