Letters to the Editor Republic v. Democracy Kudos for OVN and for the author of “Why the 2nd Amendment Matters and Why it Must Not Be Altered” (OVN 06/15/08). Some of the fundamentals of our republic and the principle of Creator endowed unalienable rights are well defined. Understanding Republic versus democracy and why we have a Constitutional Republic to protect the rights of individuals, families, communities, states, cultures, nations, et alia, is the duty of every U.S. citizen. The protection of liberty does begin with an individual’s right (and duty) for self defense and expands. Those who accept the idea that they have no such right, that it is the government’s responsibility to defend them, have already given up their freedom! After the praise, I would be remiss if I did not point out what I believe to be a contradiction in the author’s commentary: “And more than two centuries after its inception, America’s [U.S.?] federal government remains subject to popular control/law.” Democracy is popular control: a republic is ruled by law. Our republic’s Constitution is [was] the supreme law of the Land. Our presidents, governors, other politicians, and a majority of residents pro- claim democracy because, depending on the election, anywhere from 5 to 30 percent of registered voters give them power that is not constitutionally granted because such power denies, or infringes upon, the equal, unalienable rights of others. With that wrongful power, they may correct what they view as the original Creator’s mistakes and recreate others in their own image, while forcing the rest of us taxpayers to foot the bill! A gentle reminder to Ogden Valley property owners—the 2008 tax assessments will be with us in a couple of months. Will our taxes be the same as they were in 2007 or could they be more equitable? To add to our problems with the County Commission, Don Bell, our most competent, tireless spokesman for all property owners, not only in Ogden Valley but the entire county, withdrew his candidacy for the state legislature. A valuable resident of Huntsville for approximately 20 years, he was the first to step forward to challenge the auditor and county commission for their unbelievable assignment of property taxes in Ogden Valley—unlike our Mayor, James C. On June 24, 800 fires destroyed 17 homes in California. On that same day, 50 families in Nordic Valley took steps to protect their homes from wild fire. Each participated in the Nordic Valley Firewise Annual cleanup in an effort to create a defensible space around their home. On June 24 – 27 a crew of nine kept busy chipping landscaping debris that residents had piled along the road. The cleanup was made possible through a matching grant to the Nordic Valley Firewise Committee. The grant from the Utah Department of Natural Resources paid for the brush crew; The Ogden Valley news has the sole authority to edit and locate any classified advertisement as deemed appropriate. And where were the friends he asked to come and support him? While mayor, I received a similar request as Don made to our current board. I, as well as my board, unanimously approved this request; it was a no-brainer decision and none of us claimed to be a tutelary spirit. Mayor, look up the definition of “moral turpitude.” Residents Work to Prevent Fires Like Those Claiming Homes in California Invitation for Articles The staff of The Ogden Valley news welcomes the submission of articles by our readership. Apparently, Don’s interest in local government hasn’t met with everyone’s approval.
