He married the former Melba Howell on September 11, 1953 in the Salt Lake Temple. Dee lived his life with great enthusiasm. He believed that happiness was found in the combination of hard work, recreation with family and friends, and service to others. He was, foremost, a devoted family man. He loved his family greatly and was always scheming for ways to get them together. Road trips, surprise visits to Disneyland, church history excursions, and Lake Powell were either on the calendar or on his mind. Dee was a loyal friend and made many cherished relationships that have endured throughout his lifetime. He saw the uncommon in common people and found something to appreciate and celebrate in everyone. Dee served faithfully in the church. He served three full-time missions: in the Northern States Mission where he met Melba, and together at the Ogden Cannery and in the Utah Salt Lake City Mission. Condolences may be sent to the family When Sherm was ready for a third career, he applied to BYU=s Law School in 1985 at the age of 62. He was accepted and offered a merit scholarship. Before the school year began, a construction loan came through and he was committed to building Liberty Square Apartments, a large complex in Provo for BYU students. As a third career, he became a general contractor and built apartments and homes for himself and others. Finally, he built a home in his much-loved home town of Huntsville. He took time out from building to run for Mayor of Provo in 1989. That he did not succeed was a great relief to Virginia. When Sherm=s physical energy declined, he began to write books from the accumulated notes and poems of a lifetime. Writing was one of his most satisfying accomplishments. Sherm was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, serving as bishop in Roy, Utah and Hawthorne, California while still in the Air Force. He served on two High Councils and was First Counselor in the St. Louis Stake Presidency. He was teaching the Gospel Doctrine Sunday School Class when Virginia first met him. Most of all he enjoyed being a teacher to young people and basketball coach for the young men. In his later years he served as an ordinance worker at the Provo Temple. Sherm had the blessing of many good years and was an inspiration to his family. He is survived by his wife, Virginia, his four children, Jeanna (Chris) Nielson, Steve (Sherie) Hislop, Christine (Stephen) Fuller, and Caroline Hislop. He is also survived by the source of so much joy, his 16 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Sherm is survived by one sibling, his sister, Jane Brubaker. The family would like to express their appreciation for the kind and loving care given to Sherm in his home by Alpine Hospice, especially to his nurses Dana and Verna, and his aides Luke, Ian, and Adam. They treated Sherm like they would their own family. We are grateful also for the tender mercies of family and friends in the Pleasant View 5th Ward.
