I explained to them that Afrikaans isn’t really an “African” language and that the majority of South Africans are Christians and that everyone in South Africa is bilingual. They speak English and a “native” language, sometimes more than one! But nothing of this mattered to the Ransoms—I was it! I had to teach some words and verses to other church members who would also be Zuzu people—Cathy Stone and her two daughters Katrina and Colleen; and Hope’s two girls, Stephanie and Sierra. Then Yolandi decided that it sounded like fun too. Participants in the Pioneer Bible Camp gather around the camp. All of a sudden we were the Zuzu tribe from a remote little village in Africa. We had to dress as “Zuzu” people. And we had to bring anything remotely African to decorate our village. Of course, being me, I had to do it realistically and Cathy, who is also known for doing things thoroughly . . . well, it turned into quite the production! I tapped into my limited knowledge of African tribes and—along with Cathy who, just like me, has a very overactive and creative mind—created the fictitious Zuzu Tribe. And of course, I could not only be a Zuzu pa he woman, I was a witch doctor—a Sangoma. (Please remember that I missed out on “dressing up” in a “no Halloween” country! This was my only chance.) I bought yards and yards of African like material and lots of beads, and Yolandi decided that she would be not only my daughter but also the translator. In this make believe world, she created an interesting background. Sepi (Yolandi) studied English from missionaries—sort of against the will of her “Sangoma” mother— me. Cathy, Katrina, Colleen, Seirra, Stephanie, Yolandi and I got together and I handed out the Africa material which we wrapped around our bodies and hair. It took us an hour every morning to turn into Zuzu women. The first morning I had to give a speech to the missionaries, welcoming them to our village. Sepi (Yolandi) translated every word. It was so authentic, I’m sure some believed our little production to be real! And Cathy and I kept on being creative. We felt that we had to give the missionaries a real African experience in a real village! So it came to be that one of our children, Stephanie, did not return from the river! The missionaries offered to pray for her and then went with Cathy to look for her. But, drat— they only found her water jug next to the river. We knew that a crocodile must have taken her! While we mourned (I actually got tears in my eyes), the missionaries offered to dig a pit and make a water well so we did not have to go to the crocodile infested river anymore. Again I choked up—they were so thoughtful. Another day Katrina (who had class and could not play Zuzu that day) disappeared; a lion got another one of us! Cathy and | had another great idea and this time we did not kill anyone off! We decided that since we just sat in the village, visiting with the missionaries and translating words—we could keep ourselves busy by making beaded bracelets. We bought thousands of wooden beads and made about a hundred bracelets, which we then gave to the missionaries. looked forward to another day with the Zuzu people. They had almost finished building the huts, and they had learned so much from Saria and Cathy and their daughters. They could say, “good morning” in the Zuzu language, or Afrikaans, Goeiemore!” And they could say thank you when strange foods like dried mopani worms and dried wild pig was offered to them. Sepi taught them how to say thank you in Afrikaans. It was spelled ‘Baie dankie’ and pronounced “Buy a donkey!” So far, Sepi translated a lot of words so that they, the missionaries, could formulate a Christian message to the Zuzu people. They wanted to give the Zuzu people the primary message from the Bible, John 3:16. Some words were easy, some not. God was spelled exactly the same way but it is pronounced with a guttural “gggee” sound. And seun is the Afrikaans version for son and /oved is lief gehad and gave is gegee. It was a misty, cold morning in June when the missionaries from Pioneer Bible Camp walked down the rustic dirt road to the Zuzu Village high above the Valley. The road was uneven with rocks, meandering through the cottonwood, birch, and oak brush. Ahead of them, Sarina, the Sangoma, sat in the middle of the dirt road on her blanket. She was chanting and bowing over the twigs and stones that she threw to read messages from the so-called spirits. Candles burned around her and she blew smoke toward them. This did not look good. Sepi stood next to her mother. As the missionaries SE cel Selling Real Estate in Ogden Valley! 3404 N. I met wonderful children from all over America and knowing them now, I am sure the future is going to be a better place because of them. I am also thankful that I spent so much time with my fellow “Zuzus.” We aren’t just “Sunday” acquaintances anymore. We are friends. After all, we lived through pretty traumatic times—what with lion and crocodile attacks and all. I did come away from the Pioneer Bible Camp with the realization that to us it was all fiction and fun but there are real missionaries going out into world—brave Christians who really go to faraway, unknown places and often, dangerous places where people have not heard about Jesus. Places where real missionaries have to try and communicate the message of salvation to people who cannot talk English. We all, that were involved in this year’s Pioneer Bible Camp, have a new appreciation of those brave souls who give up living in their own culture with loved ones and all the conveniences of their own land to go and deliver the gospel in third world countries. On the last night of Pioneer Bible Camp’s senior week, I made traditional tribal food for the young people. Krummel Pap en Sheba (Crumb porridge with a tomato and onion gravy). I do think they enjoyed it more than the dried mopanie worms and wild pig! They commented on how these delicacies tasted like dried onions and beef jerky! (Really?) I had to hide behind an African singing drum so they could not see my face. I nearly burst out laughing seeing their faces when Cathy offered our Zuzu treats and Sepi warned them that it would be rude to refuse! The next night the Zuzus were the honoree guests at the camp. All week long the children worked on a special tribute to us— a lovely bell performance and this from children who had never played bells before! Then they recited John 3:16... in Afrikaans! “Want so lief het God die wereld gehad, dat hy sy eniggebore seun gegee het, sodat elkeen wat in Hom glo, nie verlore mag gaan nie, maar die ewige lewe kan he.” I was astonished! I told them that after that week I (as a Sangoma) was almost convinced to become a Christian. They also had gifts for us—bracelets and wooden boxes with John 3:16 painted on them. And I got all teary eyed when they said, “Ons is lief vir jou... “(We love you.). My final message to these wonderful young people as they go into the future was: “Die genade van onse Here Jesus Christus sy met julle almal! Amen.” Openbaring 21:21 (Revelations 21:21). Julle mag nie in my kraal ingaan nie!” Sepi translated in a serious, troubled voice, “The spirits told Saria that you made Sierra ill. You may not go into the village.” The missionaries had to think fast. “We will pray for your little girl so that God will heal her!” They suggested. Sepi translated to Saria and Saria nodded that that would be good. They all went to the village where Sierra rested on Cathy’s lap. The missionaries prayed for her and miraculously the little girl jumped up immediately after the prayer and ran into the bush and played with her sisters. Saria thanked the missionaries by offering them dried mopanie worms and wild pig. And so another day in the Zuzu village came to an end.
