Snowbasin Asked to Make Skiing Affordable to Youth Eden Feasibility Report to be finished about August 15 Our extended family has spent many enjoyable times visiting and recreating in Ogden Valley, as we have a family vacation home in Liberty. We have also been able to invite many visitors to come and enjoy these activities with us. We have found that many of our friends had not previously discovered the uniquely wonderful skiing experience found at Snowbasin, though the word is getting out more and more. We have a couple of suggestions for making the Snowbasin area even more outstanding. There has been practically no growth in skier days at U.S. ski areas during the last decade in spite of tremendous new capital investment. The new investment has required increases in the price of lift passes, making it difficult for most families with children to ski. We are concerned about the aging skiing population. Where will the next and, hopefully larger, generation of skiers come from? School programs and family skiing seem to have diminished in our generation. Our proposal is for Snowbasin to consider bringing its family prices into parity with the Cottonwood and Park City ski areas. A good start was made last year when Snowbasin reduced the price of a season pass, for those who are 17 years old and under, from $499 to $249. But talking with several Ogden area parents on the Snowbasin lifts, we found that they either had children skiing in Park City, or were not teaching their children how to ski at all. They felt that on the days when they are teaching their children how to ski, they are not doing much real skiing themselves, which becomes an economic issue when the combined cost of passes for a family can be about $200. We would hope that decisions makers from Snowbasin would consider altering the cost for ski passes for children, or begin offering special price packages such as those offered by other Utah ski resorts. Following are a few examples: The sponsors of the Eden Feasibility Study would like to thank all of those volunteers who actively helped this process along. As you are aware, the Steering Committee was elected from the 60 plus volunteers who originally met to look at the future of Eden and to see if any changes were required or desired. The Sponsors were elected by the Steering Committee. At the first public meeting the citizens who attended voted to do a Feasibility Study and see if Eden was in a position to consider Incorporation. Utah State Law allows any signatures gathered for a Feasibility Study Petition to be used on the following petition for an election to Incorporate. However, we were only asked to look at a Feasibility report. The feasibility petition clearly stated that it was for a Feasibility Study only. If the community decided to proceed to the next step, then we were to start over with a brand new petition. When we met with those doing the feasibility study, to answer any questions they might have, they asked if we would agree to an extension of their study period to about August 15, 2004. We fully supported that extension. We felt that it was better to take a little longer and have a complete and correct product so the citizens of Eden would have the best information possible available to them. To assist the citizens of Eden in your personal incorporation decision, the feasibility study will clearly show the projected cost to be a city over the next five years while maintaining the current level of services. We look forward to a non-biased study that will help all of us decide what is best for the future of the Eden area. Certainly, one of the “hot” items of debate has been the actual cost of running the “city.” This study will show all of us what that projected cost will be. Our anticipation is that the actual cost will be dramatically lower than those who are opposed to the study have suggested. The cost to the County for the study is about $15,000, which in this year of projected County surpluses announced at the last County Commissioners meeting, will be money well spent. You will be able to attend two required public meetings where the Study will be clearly explained. We anticipate having the full report available “online” and in written form for anyone who would like to review the actual report. This information should give all of us an opportunity to carefully look at what is best for our community. We strongly recommend that you personally review the Feasibility Study when it is published. We would suggest that you study this report and come to your own conclusions on what it says. Obviously there are two main positions on incorporation, those who are for it and those who are against it. Don’t allow any group, including us, to put their own spin on what the real facts are. The bottom line is that the citizens of Eden, all of you, should have an opportunity to decide your future. Don’t allow any group to deny you and your neighbors the right to decide what is best for you and your community. Richard Manley and Sponsors of the petition requesting a feasibility of incorporation study, len Deadline for Eden Feasibility Study Extended Weber County Commissioners have extended the completion deadline for the Eden incorporation feasibility study to August 15. Wikstrom Economic and Planning Consultants were hired under contract by the county to complete the study. The commission amended the contract at their weekly meeting held July 13. The $15,000 feasibility study began in April after 197 Eden residents signed a petition requesting the study. Snowbird — Children under 12 ski free with a parent; children age 12 to 17 get a season pass for $99 when skiing with a parent. Brighton — Children under 12 ski free with a parent. WOLF The Canyons — A season pass is $100 for students on the school honor roll. Park City — A season pass is $150 for high school students and $79 for elementary students.
