We oftentimes conclude that they do act compulsively, disrupiivejy, thoughtlessly w iilmut regard lo consequences which surely must lollow. This is the saddest part of all. because we have never factored that crucial portion of (he equation into our judgment of their actions. Accurately, we're quick to notice any physical handicap involving body appendages such as legs, arms, and other deformities or appearances because they are so undeniably visible. And I believe that most of us. hopefully, make patient, compassionate adjustments for proper consideration towards those so afflicted. But there are other irregularities, too, that lurk within the human psyche and are not visibly identifiable at first impression. I suppose it's a given that we unthinkingly fail to make allowances for these hidden, inward disturbances usually contained within personality parame-- ters. i.e., ar disorders, dyslexia, attention dcficite (ADO), hyperactive attention deficite disorder (MAI)D). or for disorders in articulation, expres- sivc. receptive language, reading, writing, or for a plethora of phobias: obsessiveimpulsivecompul-sivecxprcssivAlong with many accompanying schizophrenias and paranoias, anxieties, chronic motor and vocal disorders, agora, and the unpredictable Tourelle's Syndrome - all give cause for alarm and concern. Most of these afflictions are ones which will cause the average human to consistently fail the compassion test. None mentioned, however, should fuel a reason for a humanlike behavioral response which would lessen or degrade the status of any human being. Mainly so, if for no other reason than that our Great Creator regards each and every one of us as His children, and as such, we are literally structured as brothers and sisters on this if planet. Besides that, these burdens - or life-tes- ts you prefer - could happen to any of us, anytime. And, if not to us - to those who follow us as our posterity. . Lets fade it day care is more than just a place where I drop off my kids. It's more than merely a babysitter. My little boys are my most prized possessions and whomever cares for them while I am at work is entrusted with that which is most pree outcious to me. Since Kraig and I both work side the home, our boys spend a considerable chunk of time away from home and with someone other than mom and dad. Although I haven't heard anything about an open house, there will probably be one so look for the date and take time to go and enjoy a tour. It would be worth your time. It is interesting to me that just when I am thinking about a special topic, someone usually sends me a story or I read something that fits into the occasion so nicely. As I was thinking about how life has changed over the years to the point where I heard on the news last night that one man had been slabbed to death while getting off a transit bus in Salt Lake and a woman had been hit in her vehicle and then stabbed repeatedly by her husband who she had just got a restraining order against in Tooele, I thought about what we as citizens can do to improve our lives. And, into my hands came the Collect which the BPW (Business and Professional Women) organization' uses. It reads as follows: Keep Us, O God, From Pettiness; Let Us Be Large In Thought, In Word In Deed. Let Us Be Done With g And Leave Off May We Put Away All Pretense And Meet Each Other Face To Face Without Self-Pit- y And Without Prejudice. May We Be Never Hasty In Judgement And Always Generous. Let Us Take Time For All Things; Make Us To Grow Calm, Serene, Gentle. Teach Us To Put Into ,, I've been lucky. My employer. Intermountain Health Care (IHC), makes day care available to its employees. Devin started at the IHC Day Care when he was almost three and he ws there through kindergarten. Tyler has been going there since he was five weeks old. Two years ago. when Devin finished kindergarten and was ready to start first grade, he left the IHC Day Care and started a before and after school" program provided through the County. I remember dropping him off at the county tec. center before work for the first time I cried ail the way in to work. It wasnt that Devin was growing up," that was happening everyday. It wasn't that I didn't trust the folks at the county program. I did. It just wasn't the warm, fuzzy, familiar place I was used to having my child. was fine. To him it was a new adventure. For mom, it was a struggle. And now, it's time for Tyler to move on. Since Tyler starts kindergarten in the fall, hes old enough to participate in the County program. Kraig and I decided that it would be great to have both boys at the same place, so tomorrow will be Tys last day at the IHC Day Care. He gets to go with big brother on Monday. Tyler is excited. I'm not sure how I'm going to handle it. Oh, I'm not faced with the unfamiliarity of the County program like I was with Devin, but the IHC Day Care has been Tyler's home away from home. It has provided a safe haven for him and peace of mind for mom. The teachers are great. They do some fun things with the kids. Tyler has been on big field trips to the zoo, the dinosaur park. Lagoon and Jungle Jims. Hes been on little jaunts to the grocery store down the street to buy donuts and milk, to the bagel shop through the block to see how bagels are made, around the corner to the grassy hill to play. At the IHC Day Care, they have Easter egg hunts and Halloween parades and Mothers Day and Fathers' Day programs. They have splash days in the summer, with sprinklers, wading pools and water squirt bottles, and snow days in the winter with snow pants, gloves, hats and boms, and they have quiet time and time to learn. Tyler has learned about different cultures, different hobbies, different occupations. He remembers Fire Fighter Terry, who brought his fire engine right to the Devin - Day Care, or the Highlander who dressed in a kilt and played his bagpipes . Above all, he has received excellent care. All the teachers have a genuine concern for each child... and not for just those kids assigned to their care. I can see the love in the teachers' eyes when they tease with one of the kids, kiss a skinned knee, wipe a nose or just hug a little one. They laugh with the kids and play with them, they talk with the kids, and listen. They're fun when it's time to be fun, they're serious when its time to be serious, and they're stern when they need to be stem. But they love the child, first and always. And they teach them Tyler has learned his colors and his shapes, fun little songs and nursery rhymes and how to count. He knows how to write his name, how to count to beyond 20 and how to steal a teacher's heart. But they teach much, much more respect for others, how to plan and make decisions, how to be concerned about others feelings and how to play well with a group, or all alone. They encourage growth and imagination and they affirm the values that I am trying to instill in my boys. In realty, it isnt Tyler who is saying good bye to the IHC Day Care, its his mom. And so, to the folks at the IHC Day Care: Words cannot express the appreciation I have for all of you, for the love and care you have provided and for the the lessons you have taught. You have allowed me to be a better employee because I have been able to go to work knowing that my little one is safe and is being cared for. I have shared with you a very important part of my life, and you have shared so much with me. I will miss you all greatly, and will be forever in your debt. My heartfelt thanks to you all and I will be by to visit Lets face it old habits die hard and it's hard to say goodbye to dear friends. .
