Show FOCUS 2D May 29June 4, 1980 From the Archives Yean Ago ... From the Park Record 100 Aug. 7. 1880 KILLING FISH WITH POWDER The habit indulged in by many sportsmen of killing fish with giant powder is of much frequent occurence that we cannot permit the opportunity to pass without censuring them for their unlawful proceedings. In many of the mountain streams where trout are not so plentiful this unlawful practice is put into execution so that fishermen may succeed in obtaining what they fail to procure with hooks and lines. In the Provo River, which not long ago afforded the very best fishing grounds, but at present is considered very poor giant powder is said to have been used extensively and quite recently. But the question, is who uses it? Parties have come to us in a confidential manner and said that they knew giant powder had been used in the Provo River below the bridge, and when asked for the names of the individuals, they refused to enlighten us further on the subject. Every citizen of Utah ought to know that a. law exists prohibiting the use of this destructive agent for fishing purposes, and it is the duty of everyone that wishes to be rewarded for his efforts. The practice is not only unlawful but it is brutal and unmanly and everybody that engages in it should be prosecuted to the fell limit of the law. The Fish and Game Protective Society of Salt Lake offer a reward of S2S for evidence that will convict any person of the crime of using giant powder to kill fish during the year 1880. If the people of Summit and Wasatch Counties know of people using the aforesaid powder for the purpose of procuring fish, it is their duty to make their names known to the proper authorities, so that they may be made to suffer for their ruthless conduct. 50 Yean Ago... This is one of the revolutionary discoveries of science, which are being made so rapidly that every industry has to be constantly on the look-olest its whole method has to be changed overnight. Not so many years ago gasoline was a waste product. Then Daimier invented the gasoline engine and that part of the petroleum sud- ut denly became the most useful. The diesel engine, which used heavy oil feel has not been sufficiently developed to consume anything like the surplus left over after the gasoline has been extracted. Damp in spots, theo steamy hot.
