Gates ofVernal (formerly of Roosevelt), and Jerry Pendleton of Kearns, recently were named Team of the Year" for the Utah Walleye Fishing Circuit. The Utah Walleye circuit consists of many teams (two people per tourteam) who fish four, two-da- y naments at Starvation Reservoir, Willard Bay and Yuba Lake. In addition to the money won at each tournament, each team earns points according to the position in which they finish in each tournament. At the conclusion of the four tournaments the team with the most points is awarded team of the year honors. The final tournament was held at Starvation Reservoir the weekend of Oct. 3, 4. At each tournament a limit is placed on the number of fish that can be weighed by each team each day. Also, a time limit is placed on how long the teams can fish each day and at the end of each days time limit, each team presents its fish to be weighed; at the end of the two days, the team with the greatest total weight is the winner of that tournament To be qualified to fish the tournaments, each boat must have a livewell as it is a requirement that the fish be kept alive. If a team brings in any dead fish the team is penalised a given amount of weight for each dead fish. After the fish are weighed, they are immediately released back into the lake. Out of a possible 420 points, Gates and Pendleton earned a total of 404 points and set a record for total weight of 102.64 pounds. This is an incredible weight and could stand as the record for quite some time. It is even more amazing since under the new 1998 Utah law each fisherman was only allowed one fish over 20 inches long. At two of the tournaments each team was allowed six fish and at the other two each team was allowed seven fish. In addition to the money and many prizes won as Team of the Year, the entrance fees for all ofthe J999 tournaments are waived for Gates and Pendleton. People who have never eaten walleye have really missed a delicacy since walleye are widely acclaimed as the best eating freshwater fish. Unfortunately, walleye are found only in a few lakes and reservoirs in the state of Utah. Gates and Pendleton, who met several years ago at Starvation Reservoir while fishing just for fun, are both avd fishermen who have been fishing for Walleye for many years and are always eager to help other fishermen learn the art of fishing for walleye, which is very different than fishing for most other species. The Utah walleye circuit is sponsored by Tournaments, Inc., Robertsons Marine, and Rocky Mountain Anglers, all from Salt Lake City. The Eagles and the Red Devils battle on the football field for four hard quarters. After the game they meet in the middle of the field and shake hands and congratulate each other. Then they gather in the biology room of Duchesne High and eat roast beef and chcddnr sandwiches, homemade cookies, drinks and snacks. The members of Team DHS consisting of parents and boosters, co- ordinate the meals and make it all possible. Parents of the Grande athletes said they were amazed and very appreciative of the hospitality of the Duchesne parents. The hot food means the team will not have to stop and eat on the long bus ride home. The boosters also present'd the Seniors and Coaches with a wrist watch with the Duchesne Eagles logo on the fare. In addition the coaches wives were presented with a corsage fortheir help and support People dont realize how much effort is put in behind the scenes," says assistant football coach Rich Gilbert," They work hard and spend a lot of time helping the programs.
