Show 77 I i sne WAITING FOR A County area firemen sit and wait as they prepare to take part in a flashover fire course, Saturday morning in Roosevelt. The training session was presented through the Utah Fire and Rescue Academy. FIRE-Duche- Sportsmen to benefit from license fee increases House Bill 45 will allow Utahs state sport fish hatcheries to continue operating at peak efficiency, make additional transplanted and upland game birds available for hunting and keep millions of acres of school trust lands open to sportsmen and wildlife viewers. The bill, sponsored by Rep. Michael R. Styler of Delta, was recently passed by the 1998 Utah Leg--, islature. House Bill 45 raises by $2 the cost of a fishing license for those under 65 years of age, and the cost of a small game license by $1. The increased cost of the two licenses raises the cost of a combination license by $3. In addition, the fee for a Wildlife Habitat Authorization has been increased by .75 cents and the falconry license by $5. Pending approval by the governor, fee increases go into effect Jan. pen-rear- 1, 1999. The $2 fee increase will allow Utahs sport fish hatcheries to continue operating at peak efficiency. The extra money will be put into a State Fish Hatchery Maintenance Account and used for repair and replacement of Division of Wildlife Resources sport fish hatchery facilities. In the past, funding to maintain the hatcheries hasn't been easy to come by, resulting in a number of them reaching the end of their life expectancy and two ofthem Scott Avenue and Beaver being closed. "We were almost into a crisis," Joe Valentine, Division aquatic culture supervisor said ofthe future of the Divisions sport fish hatcheries. Many of the hatcheries are more than 40 years old and their concrete raceways are literally falling apart. The extra funds will allow for preventative maintenance at hatcheries before extensive repairs are needed, and for replacement of hatchery facilities that are past that - - point. Its just like your car or home or anything else, "Valentine said. "The better we take care of our hatcheries, the more well get out of them. Valentine estimates $1 million will be generated annually by the $2 fishing license fee increase, and $2 of the combination license fee increase, to keep Utahs sport fish hatcheries operating effectively. This is especially important with an estimated 1 million people, some of whom will be anglers, expected to be added to the states population by 2020. The Division originally asked for a $1 fishing license fee increase but anglers and the Utah Wildlife Board felt additional revenue was needed and recommended the $2 increase, instead. Tm glad they were visionary in their thinking, because thats going to make a difference in the future, Valentine said. "The State Fish Hatchery Maintenance Account is our legacy to future generations of Erin go Braugh with KUED St. Patricks Night OSTRICH MEAT READY ROPER-- A young lady dashes out of the gate and on her way to competing in the breakaway roping event at the USU Rodeo Teams two-da- y event in Vernal, Friday and Saturday. lands open to sportsmen and wildlife viewers. The increased popularity of falconry in Utah over the past several years, and the resulting increase in administrative costs to run Utahs falconry program, was the reason for the $5 Utah falconry license fee increase. The additional money will be used to fund additional paperwork processing and to cover the cost of a computer data base that has been purchased to better run the expanding program, said Linda Rawley, Division wildlife resource specialist. continued from page 11 dans, Nutritionists and everyone involved in a the healthy lifestyle community are recommending the benefits ofOstrich meat because its 99 fat free" continued Mr. Warrington.
