Duchesne's Thiess Lindsay (not Lindsay Thiess as announced on the radio) tossed in two free throws to close the gap to three points at 44-4The Eagles wasted two chances of tying the game as a three-pointwas off mark and a bad pass gave the ball back to Juab. BASKET CLASH 2-- A n tir ft .7 .0 tgtnintsrnwilBum 1 by Aldon Rachele IVe taken a great many pictures lince I became a pro back in 1975, ind right now Im using Camera Vo. 5 that was purchased with my iwn money so thus I've done a lot of slicking, saying cheese and telling jeople when to smile. First person I ever took a picture if as a professional snapper was brmer New York Yankee star, Hickey Mantle, who just happened e be in town my first day on the job 'or a weekly newspaper in Vernal. I should note that my old me that I didnt have to report 0 work until Monday, but I found ut that Mantle was in town the rhursday in 1975 before I officially egan my career, and I thought, Mantle is in Town!! How much do I lave to pay you to interview him?" However, I didn't have to pay to alk to the Mantle. The greatest noment in my newspaper career so ar was the First Day and I didnt ;et paid any cash, but talking to Hantle was worth more that money ind especially to this Yankee fan. Mantle was a bit grumpy, but vhen we started talking about each ither1 fathers teaching us the game f baseball he became nicer, and we olked about his long distance hom-rhow much he missed the game ind a small town boy making it big n the Big City.. Since my interview IVe read a peat deal about Mantle and how he :ould be a bit rude to the press. He vas also known to give the same disitory about his famous long tance homer in old Griffith Stadium n Washington, D.C. where he got tarried away with the facts. It sound-i- d like the story he told me, but I lidnt care because having Mantle Jome To Vernal To Meet Me was rosier than Aldon Rachele going to Vew York City to chat with Mantle. Meeting Mantle on the first (unlocal for the the on job mid) day to lewspaper in Vernal was similar 1 rookie slugging a homer in his irst at bat off Nolan Ryan, Sandy Koufax, Cy Young. Magic Johnson was also there along with Karl Malone, John Stockton, Mark Eaton of the Jazz. Just lately I looked over my negatives from the game, and most of the pictures centered on Eatons battle against Jabbar, who was one of the top superstars of the 1970s 80s. I didnt have many pictures of Malone, who was just in his second year. However, I located one where he was driving to the hoop for a layup. He was just a skinny little kid, but he has sure added muscle to his frame to become the top power forward in the NBA, MVP award winner and a star on the Late Show with David Lettcrman. Duchesne jumped out to an early lead and was down by just one, 19-1-8 after one quarter, but Gunnison went on to beat the Eagles, Friday to drop DHS out of the State Tournament.
