Mofiat County grabbed a 0 lead in the top of the first inning in the home opener in Roosevelt that was played under warm sunny skies, but Union came right back to take a 2 edge in its half of the inning with the key blow a grand slam by Preston Marx, which drove in Chaz Frandsen, Charlie Jackson and Brian Ballou. Earlier Mike Hurley was walked and scored the first Cougar run of the inning. The Craig, Colorado bunch added a run in the third to narrow Union's lead to two runs at and then the Cougars got down to baseball business with nine runs in a row to beat Moffat County, 14-- 3 with the game ending early due to the Ten-Ru- n Rule. Austin Sherman singled and Hurley was walked. Frandsen hit a pop fly, but the Mofiat County catcher turned the wrong way and failed to catch the ball. Frandsen took advantage of hia new baseball life by gaining a walk with two outs to load up the bases. Jackson ripped a mighty shot up the middle far a double that sent home Sherman and Hurley with a 3 Cougar advantage. Ballou made the Mofiat County pitcher blue when he picked up a walk, and Frandsen scored soon af a 9--3 lead in the bottom ofthe third. Moffat County's first man up led off with a single, but the next batter flew out The Craig base runner was wasted when Union turned a perfect doubleplay to end the top of the fourth. Parker Morrill didnt park it. However, he came pretty close as he gained a triple when he ate some dirt making a headfirst slide into third base. Rick Rasmussen was walked, and then he attempted a steal. Rasmussen was nailed at second base, and it was a plus instead of a minus as Mofiat County forgot about Morrill, who dashed across home plate for a 10--3 advantage after four innings. Frandsen started the game and pitched four innings. He picked up the pitching win, but Jackson also saw some time on the mound. He had a fifth inning that included a strikeout of the final batter. Union put Mofiat County out of it misery with four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to win the game by 11 runs. Jackson produced a double and then came home on e Ballous single. Marx gained a hit to place runners on the base paths. Morrill reached the bases on a fielders choice when Ballou was forced out at third. Union's Lady Cougar basketball had an excellent season of 22-- 2 and placed second at the State Tournament. Unfortunately tournament play made for a longer basketball season that took practice time away from the softball team, but Coach Bowthorpe doesn't mind. She hopes that the hoop squad success will help the softball squad to a fine season as well. A recent Salt Lake Tribune soft-bapoll had Lehi ranked No. 1, Union No. 2, Bear River, No. 3; Snow Canyon, No. 4 and Uintah, No. 5. Union dropped games to Timpview, a team, 15-- 5 and Snow Canyon, 18-Union scored just three runs in the first inning against Ogden, and then hit the jackpot with 15 in the second, which featured three homers by Frandsen, Jackson and Marx. Frandsen and Jacksons shots were k grand slams. Marx hit homers in the first and second run blow and the other ngs-three blast. Union wasn't one a two-ru- n done hitting homers. Rasmussen ripped out a pitch for a homer in the third. Union also scored two in the third and one in the fourth in the 21-- 9 win over Ogden. homer in Ballou had a three-ru- n the second game vs. Ogden, and Jackson belted out a home run in the game against Snow Canyon. Union will host Provo, Friday at 3 p.m. and Parowan, Saturday at 12 noon.
