The pass was no good. "During practice I sometimes go for a drop kick. However, a few guys were open so I tried a pass," Yergensen said. Yergensen ended a three game dry spell by hitting a field goal to crack a 7 tie and guide the Utes to a 30-- 7 win over New Mexico, Saturday afternoon in Salt Lake City. The game was played under wet conditions, which will help the state 7-- break out of its moisture slump. Yergensens grand parents are Elmer and Josephine Yergensen, Roosevelt His father, Michael Yergensen, also lives in Roosevelt. Yergensens 38 yard field goal came with 25 seconds left in the first quarter and put Utah up by three points, 10-"I was sort of nervous. It had been three games since a field goal. Everything was perfect I knew it was going through when I kicked it," said Yergensen. "It was a big field goal because it put us up by three. I felt the turning point of the game was when their kicker missed a field goal. This was a good time for me to break out of my slump." A successful field goal by New Mexico in the second quarter could have cut the Utah lead to six. year. It hit the net or it could have been a 65 yarder," he said. Yergensen had a fine kicking game. However, the leading factor in the victory for the Utes was a school record setting 478 ynrds gained on the ground. "We didnt have to worry about the pnssing today. It (the run) was there, and so we took it until New Mexico stopped it, which they didnt do," raid Utah head football coach Ron McBride. The running attack was super, but most of the Roosevelt fans at the game had their attention focused on the fix under the direction ofkicker Yergensen. 7. or Utahs Chris Yergensen, left, kicks the ball into the net on the GETTING Utah sidelines prior to going into the game Tor a Field goal attempt.
