This bill commemorate the Quincentenary of the first voyage to the New World by Christopher Columbus, through establishment of the Christopher Columbus Quincentenary Scholarship and Endowment Fund. The bill, S.1725, would provide funding for high school students to attend the college or university of their choice, through the sale of commemorative coins honoring Columbus. If voted into law, Columbus Scholars Foundation would use the proceeds from commemorative coin sales to fund the summer program and pay for individual scholarships. No federal fluids would be used for any purpose under the bill. The idea for the Columbus Scholars Foundation and its related programs was first conceived by the Christopher Columbus Quincentenary Jubilee Commission, the Presidential Organization charged with planning and executing the national commemoration in 1992, as one ofits educational initiatives. The Commission has already conducted a pilot program of the New World Summer, in which high school students from around the nation joined their counterparts from other countries in a monthlong study of history, geography, foreign languages, and international studies.
