During the 1970 solar eclipse across the eastern United States, 145 eye injuries were reported, 40 percent of these victims thought they were using safe direct viewing methods and 60 percent used no protection at all when looking at the sun. During a solar eclipse the moon passes between the sun and the earth. With the sky darkened, people mistakenly assume they can watch an eclipse, unaware that invisible rays from the Bun can painlessly burn the retinas in their eyes. These burns, known as solar retinopathy or retinal scarring, can result in permanent vision loss or even blindness. The Utah Affiliate of the National Society to Prevent Blindness warns, "Never look directly at the sun, even during an eclipse. At no time during the coming eclipse will it be safe to observe the Bun with the naked eye in the continental United States." There are a few safe ways to watch an eclipse without exposing your eyes to the damaging effects of the suns rays: Watch the eclipse on television. Contact Hansen Planetarium and view the eclipse through their program. View the eclipse indirectly. Here's how to see the eclipse indirectly: Get a large cardboard box (12" or larger). 12" hole in the upper part of one end. 3. Tape a piece of aluminum foil over the hole. 4. With a pin, poke a tiny hole in the aluminum foil. 5. Tape a piece of white paper on the inside of the opposite end of the 1. x 12" x 21" 2. Cut a box. 6. Stand with your back to the sun. 7.
