Heisman Trophy winner, Ty Detmer of Brigham Young University, wasnt in Roosevelt However, the next best thing, the trophy, was in town, Tuesday, June 25 along with two Cougar athletes, linebacker Scott Giles and punter-kickEarl Kauffman. Both are seniors. Two Heisman Trophies were made each year with one going to Detmer and the other to BYU. Assistant BYU Athletic Director Val Hale stated that the Cougars are taking the trophy on the road to its fans in Utah and southern Idaho. Quarterback Detmer is one of the few juniors from the West to win the prise trophy. Detmer is returning for his senior year at er BYU. "Its fun to share it with the Half of our season ticket holders are from outside of whole state. Utah County," said Hale. "We should have a pretty good team at BYU this upcoming season while pitying our most difficult schedule ever." The Cougars have a preseason game scheduled against Florida State. Giles started at the linebacker position for the Cougars after four games into the season. "I remember the first game I started against Colorado State in front of 65,000 fans. I had a good game and fulfilled a dream of playing college ball. My grandparents came down, and my parents watched me play. You play for yourself but also for your family," aid Giles. Giles is a graduate cf Timpview High School in Provo where he played football and wrestled. He was a state champion his senior year at 167 pounds. "My senior year was the only time I beat a Uintah guy in a dual match. I can still remember my freshman year when we had to wrestle Uintah in Vernal before a packed crowd," Giles said. The Utes have won 20 state high school wrestling championships since 1958. Kauffman has been the punter the team. Kauffman was among the top four punters in the nation. "I had a punt against Wyoming. It shot off my foot and took off. It went 64 yards in the air and then rolled ten more. I kicked it from our 15, and it ended up on their 6," said Kauffman. "I had a great game punting against Miami.
