SANITARIAN 21 may underfill One full ruts can produce scars PUBLIC Volumes NOTICES 1 "Soma vehicle operators dont realize wheel ruts they leave behind in a pretty mountain meadow will become a permanent scar for years to come as others fallow their tracks, admonishes Carol Lyle, Ranger of the Ashley National Forest Vernal Ranger District She is reminding the public to Tread Lightly on Vernal Ranger District land. (Tread Lightly" is a program endorsed by the Forest Service that teaches vehicles proper use of cm protected public lands.) According to Iyle and her staff, increased ATV and other off road vehicle use on the National Forests has left marty ecars on the land. When ground conditions are wet, off road vehicle operators need to avoid meadows and high speed travel that includes tire spinning and digging activities. A new set of tracks or wheel ruta ia all too often an open invitation for someone else to follow and in some cases, a new unauthorised travel route is created. Sensible off road vehicle operation means taking care of the land fay knowing and complying with regulations. Off road vehicle operators are enoouragsd to stop by the Forest Service Office at 1680 West Highway 40 (Ashton Energy Center) in Vernal and pick up a brochure on how to Tread lightly. They may alao obtain a Vehicle Travel Map which clearly shows those areas open and closed to vehicle traffic. The travel map is the same as last year, no changes were made for 1988. The map outlines a wide variety of places to ride in the Vernal Ranger District 781-077- NOTICE INVITING BIDS Sealed bidi will be received at the office of General Manager at 355 Weat 1300 South, Orem, UT 84057 until 10 o'clock AM MDT on Thursday, July 7, 1988 far furnishing all plant materials, and labor and performing all work far construction of the Duchesne River Canal Rehabilitation, Duchesne Feeder Canal Rehabilitation, for the Central Utah Water Conservancy District, at which time the proposals will be publicly opened and lead aloud. During hie navy ogy, Kynaston leads tree-planti- . ng Eagle Scout candidate, Chris Kynaston, directed the efforts of six fellow scouts of Troop 775 in a tree planting project aimed at partial rehabilitation of land burned by wildlife. The Scouts along with Gib Kynaston, Chriss father, and BLM project supervisor, Paul Buhler, planted 1,200 Douglas. Fir seedlings in Dick Canyon which is located south of Bitter Creek and West of the ' Crippled Cowboy Cow outfit Besides reestablishing the native Douglas Fir for soil stabilisation and general rehabilitation, the long-tereffects ofthe project will be to replace wildlife shelter which had been destroyed. According to the BLM prqject supervisor, Paul Buhler, about 500 to 600 Douglas Fir were planted in the general area about two years ago and they have about a 70 percent survival rate, so we are very optimistic about this Scout project. He aleo stated that just waiting for natural regeneration would mean up to a 400 to 500 year wait for adequate seed of the seedling should result in adequate reproduction within the next 50 to 60 years. These Scouts have made a significant contribution and have helped Mother Nature hurry-u- p her process, said Buhler. Other Scouts participating in the tree planting prqject ware: David and Thomas Rust, Richard Buhler, Brandon Bowden, Kevin Bristoll, and Duane Boren. Whan trophy lake trout are brought into the dock, the first question! bystanders usually ask are, How large is it?" and Who caught it?" These question! are' closely fallowed by "How old is it7" Its a good question end one that can be difficult to answer. Many fish can be agsd the seme way trees can, by counting their growth rings. Like a tree, fish grow faster during reasons when food is abundant, this growth spurt ia reflected in growth rings on the scales and other hard parts of a fish's body. Unfortunately, when fish, like the trophy size lake trout, ere able to feed the growth rings blur and biologists have to rely on other methods to determine age and -- year-roun- d, growth rates. One common method is tagging fish, its mqjor drawback is that the biologists have to rely heavily on anglers returning the tags on the fish they catch. Age and growth studies from Flaming Gorge show that lake trout grow slowly their first five to seven years of life said Roger Schneidervin, Utah Division of Wildlife Resources fisheries biolo Len Randolph gist at Flaming Gorge. During this period they feed on zooplankton, crayfish and aquatic insects. Upon reaching 24 to 28 inches they switch to an almost exclusively fish diet and their growth rate increases dramatically. Even bo, a lake trout is probably 10 to 12 years old. Zooplankton, crayfish and insects are primarily abundant during the late spring; summer and early fall months. During the winter, these food source are greatly reduced so the young lake trout don't grow very much and thus develop growth rings. When the lake trout switch to a fish diet, the growth rings begin to blur because fish are available 20-pou- . year-roun- The UDWR and the Wyoming Game and Fish Department began a major tagging effort in 1982 to help determine the age, growth and exploitation rates oflake trout in Flaming Gorge. ' Approximately 400 lake trout have been tagged each spring since 1985 with a$5 reward tag," Schneidervin said.
