Show Page 2- - June 29. 1988 HJJimtah Basin Standard Get tough on Teen Drug abuse It's a simple fact, that drugs are killing e, no young people every day and matter where they are can avoid or deny the fact that its happening. Even here in the Basin, drugs are a bigger problem than most people know or even want to admit Drug use is draining the vitality of our young people; wrecking their health, their education, their homes, families and prematurely ending their young lives and something hu to be done, now! Drug use not only affects the user, it also has effects his or her family and friends as well as others around them. Thousands of dollars are drained from the Basin economy crimes, (includby drugs and thefts to ing support drug habits), are on the rise in die area. Drug use and sales are draining money the Basin can not afford to lose, but even worse than that, drugs are taking their toll in wasted lives of the Basins future, our young men and women. Talk to your children, friends, neighbors, police department and local government officials about it Ask questions and let people know you are opposed to illicit drug use and sales. Check your library, your local hospital, clinic and other service organizations for information about drugs and drug use, so you know what it is you're talking about and fighting against Set an example by taking a personal Stand against drug use and drug dealers. If you know someone who might use drugs, no-on- urge them to seek professional help immediately. If you suspect someone of dealing drugs, let the police know about it, dont keep it to yourself. People who sell illicit drugs are condemning their customers to death, sooner or later. It isnt a matter of crime, or of politics, or even of money, it is a matter of life and death. This is WAR, and whats at stake is our greatest and most precious resource, the lives of our young men and women. There can be no "neutral" parties, or "fence-sittin- g, because there are no second te chances or reprieves for the victims of drag overdoses. That means that there can be no mercy or leniency shown to those who sell or distribute the poison either. Drags can and will kill, sooner or later, unless those that sell them are stopped, and those who use them receive treatment in time. The lives we save may be the son or daughter of a neighbor, friend, or maybe someone even closer to us. Dont just think about it, do something, now, before its too late! drug-relat- ed Several state legislators have championed bills to stiffen penalties for drug users, but even more so for drug dealers. One congressional task force that Jim Hansen is on, even recommended that the death penalty be given to drug "kingpins', but even that may not be enough to stem this destructive tide by itself. Its not enough to just say no to drugs for ourselves or our loved ones, comprehensive, cooperative community action must be taken to put some real "teeth" in laws dealing with drugs and drug dealers. Help must be provided through local treatment centos for those who suffer from dependencies. We must become educated and aware in the areas of drug and chemical dependency. last-minu- ' Appreciates our recreation person EDITOR'S NOTE-T- he Uintah DARD watcomas and - like to thank Marsha Drake, our Rooeevelt City recreation director, for taking her little baton twirlars to the night parade in Orem, in aupport ofLori Yack, our Mias Uintah Baain', who was in the parade aa a contestant for Miss Utah.
