Longhorn head coach, David Peck was pleased with the efforts of his team. "The kids really came out to play, he said. He pointed out that is was the defense that scored for Altamont both times. And in a crucial point in the game, the defense held their goal against the Mustangs when there was less than a yard to go. Outstanding defensive players included Terry Harding with the interception and touchdown that put Altamont on the scoreboard,7 as well as 12 unassisted and assisted tackles; Gary Brinker-hof-f with 10 unassisted and 9 Sorensen ran a assisted tackles as well as a pass interception; Danny Fisher with 4 unassisted and 9 assisted tackles. The Longhorns chalked up a total of 96 yards passing with Ronny Marshall throwing for 61 yards, and Gary Dudley throwing for 35, a much improved passing game. With both quarterbacks returning next year, we should see some great passing from Altamont Peck said the team members were excited About next year. They will be losing about 10 seniors this year, and most of than off the defensive line, but the offense should still be petty good. In fact, with some work during the summer, the coach expects the offense to be much stronger next year. deration, Utah Cattlemen's Association. LX3 at-- ) . .Fall Fertilizing Advantages As Of the four major nutrients, nitrogen (N), Phosphate (P), Potash (K), and Sulfur (S), Only two, N & S, have the possibility of leeching or volatilizing. Phosphate and potash will not move more than about inch, in our base soils, clay especially in a years time. Even in ex- cessive amounts of rainfall or P & K will stay right where it is applied, and unless in an extreme sandy soil condition, the P & K nutrients will not be lost. and sulfur on the Nitrogen other hand must be applied at the proper time and in the proper place to avoid fertilizer loss. Sulfur is in a So4 chemical form and carries a negative charge the same as the soil. Since two negatives repel each other, the sulfur is free to go up where it can escape into the atmosphere or down where the water table can carry it below the root zone. Nitrogen also can move the same way as does sulfur, but only when it is in a negative form (No3). This form is called the "Nitrate" form, a readily available plan food form. When nitrogen is in the form (NH4), it has an opposite charge to the soil, therefore it stays attached to the soil like a magnet until the of the soil it from to the ammonic change nitrate form where the plant can utilize it. In order for this change to take place, the temperature has to be above 50 degrees. The most common nitrogen used in our area is Am am-mon- ic micro-organis- monium Nitrate (34-0-0- ). its name indicates, it is made up of ammonic and nitrate nitrogen, 50 of each. This is an excellent product because 'A the nitrogen will go to work in cold temperatures, the other !A waits until warmer temperatures. Other commonly used fer- tilizers, 16-20-- 0, 0, are all and "Ammonium Phosphates," a make up of Ammonium Nitrogen and Phosphate. These products are excellent to apply in the fall because the nitrate will stay fixed in the soil until warm spring temperatures. However, for the purpose of decomposing stubble in the fall, Ammonium Nitrate is recommended so the Nitrate form will go to work in the cool fall temperatures. Ortho's unipels are also made up of 18-46- -0 Nitrate Nitrogen. Many have asked, "If phosphate and potash don't move and stay where applied, then how does the plan roots get the nutrients unless the fertilizer is turned under?" Good question, and simple answer. The Alfalfa plant has roots that feed near the surface, therefore top dressing of fertilizer is sufficient. The same is true of Grass Clover pastures. In small grains however, the feeding roots are deep, so the phosphate, and potash must be turned under or banded into the root zone. Since Nitrogen moves up and down in the soil, it can be applied either way. Pro Ag Service is Always in Season" "Where Good Service .
