Show Knowiden Local Democrats completes adopt platform Last Thursday, May 8, 1984, the Democratic Convention for Duchesne County lived up to its conservative roota by adopting a 16 jdank platform of a conservative lean. In dosing the convention, Roland Uresk, Duchesne County Democratic Party Chairman, gave the delegatee the final thought, "As you leave remember, many will confront you with the accusation that Democrats are all liberal But tonight you have adopted a platform any conservative in the county would be proud of. The convention unofficially opened about 6 p.m. with several state candidates introducing themselves to the delegates. Gubernatorial candidates Kem Gardener and Wayne Owens, State Treasurer candidate Brian Moss son of Frank Moss, former US Senator from Utah. State Attorney General candidate Joe Tesch, 3rd District Congressional candidate Bruce Baird were all in attendance. They given an opportunity to their views after the convention opened officially and then rushed off to make a similar appearance at the Uintah County Democratic Convention. Roland Uresk won a couple of hats at the County Convention. First he was County Chairman. But he also wore the hat of a candidate, he is running as candidate for State Representative in District 66. And, before the night was over he also had the hat of delegate to the State Democratic Convention. deled Two other gates at the convention were Lee Nelson and John Gale. Both were delegates to convention from their precincts, both were candidates for county office (Nelson for 4 year commissioner and Gale for 2 year commissioner); and they also became delegates to the State Convention, by the time the night concluded. Also, by the time the night had concluded ten other delegates to the State Convention, with four alternates, had been selected. But moat of this took place after the proposed platform had been read, discussed amended, and adopted. The platform, as proposed, was altered slightly via two minor amendments and the addition of one additional plank. The first minor amendment was to the first plank of the platform. This plank urged "immediate development of... adequate water for culinary, agricultural and industrial purpose... At this point the plank was amended to include the w'wds "at a reasonable and just multi-hatte- rate; with some reference, thought, to the Water Conserv-vanc- y District There was a bit of discussion over the second plank of the platform, dealing with a "call for strong focal land-us- e planning to insure that focal control will continue to be maintained, via ...strong County zoning ordinances with aggressive enforcement, education and inspection..." This MONTWELL is one of the only planks which didn't pass with a unanimous vote. Another plank which had a few votes was the fourth "nay plank, dealing with support (of) the Central Utah Project with the urge that it be completed and that our areas needs be given top priority for the benefits derived from the project. This plank did pass, eventually and after discussion, unamended, but not unan-imouls- One plank which was amended dealt with the necessity for continuation of those policies which result in programs for the development of our natural resources such as oil and gas, oil shale lands, recreation facilities; and for cooperation with other agencies within the Uintah Basin in this endeavor. Five additional words were added, maintaining a spirit of conservation. Other planks dealt with topics of ...aggressive recruitment and development of business and industrial programs...; ...agof the gressive involvement County and private enterprise in the planning of, and development of recreational programs... (including a) recreational master plan..."; ...support the advancement of Senior Citizen of ...promotion programs...; programs for the physically and ...enmentally handicapped...; courage public confidence in government..."; of all are protected...; "...adequate garbarge and waste facilities for our county, ... ...support the right to work law...; ...ecourage improved educational facilities... (with) a solid basic educational program, ...quality educators,... to insure students a quality education"; ...strongly encourage efforts by County government and construction of county roads which is efficient and cost effective and which encourages the involvement of private enterprise. On additional plank was offered from the floor, it itself with the property tax situation. This plank stated: As property owners, tax payers and citizens of the State of Utah we endorse feelings expressed in a recent resolution of the Utah Association of Counties (adopted unanimously on April 6, by general membership while in convention in St George) which addresses the dual problem of inequity of property tax burden and the move by state officials to usurp authority from county offices in this particular area. The delegates chosen to forward this platform to the Democratic State Convention are: Roland Uresk, Maxine Panas, John Gale, Lee Nelson, Garry I vie, Thomas Abplanalp James Hall, George Manetc, Barbara Oberhansley, Loryn Ross, Rosealee Jensen, Glade Hadden, Clem Labrum; with alternate delegates: Gerri Harding, Clive Gary, Pearl Labrum and Gary Colton.
