Ledlie Szaraniec, Special Education, M.A. Sanderson, Elementary Education. Soil moisture measurement is an important tool in managing an irrigation system. It helps to determine how much water to apply and when to irrigate. Soil moisture measurement is the physical process of determining now much water is stored in the water movement through their tip as soil moisture changes. Neutron probe these instruments measure soil moisture by emitting neutrons and counting the number of returning neut- soil. Soil moisture measurement helps you decide if an irrigation was adequate, if water was applied uniformity, as well as when to irrigate and how much water to apply. Soil moisture is critical to crop growth. By maintaining moisture within a certain range for a given soil and crop, the best growing conditions can be achieved. Frequent irrigations slow crop growth by forcing air out of the soil. On tiie other hand, if a crop and soil moisis: under-irrigate-d ture fall below a certain level, plant stress reduces crop yields. This level varies from crop to crop and from soil to soil. Therefore, measuring soil moisture provides a method of Gravimetric soil moisture is measured in this method by weighting a soil sample before and after it is dried. controlling this important element and using only the amount of water needki to produce a crop. There are five ways commonly used to measure soil moisture. Each one must carefully use and correlated to the soil texture. The fed method in this method, the irrigator obtains a handful of soil from the crops root zone and by squeezing the sample estimates the moisture it contains. Electrical resistance blocks these show soil moisture changes by measuring resistance changes in a porous block placed in contact with the soil. these show soil Tensiometers moisture changes by measuring the changes of vacuum created by Gordon Wight, Ad- ministrative Certificate.
