Show V L (Uintah Basin I Standard Cats close season in 12--1 loss to Rams Cougars closed their season with a loss to South Sevier, Saturday in Orem. The score of the State Semi-Finround didnt reflect that game, the score was 12 to 1; "They are a good team, " Coach Brent Feld-steaal d, but they arent twelve times better than us." Once more the Cougars scored more errors than runs or hits. With one run, the Cats had a dean half dozen errors. The Rams also committed errors. In fact, the sole run to cross the plate did so after a series of throwing errors allowing Gingell to move from second to home, in the sixth inning. But the real telling point of the contest was South Sevier's pitching, according to Coach Fddstead. He stated that the Ram pitcher, Craig Blackom, was just overpowering. He could pitch himself out of trouble. Blackom totaled 14 strikeouts and only 9 walks in the eight innings. Pitching for Union was accomplished by Mike Olsen and Mike Accord. Olsen threw for four and 23 innings. He was replaced after he put a second a man on base, after being hit ' by pitched ball, with two away. Accord then came in and finished the game. South Sevier, who are presently 16 and 1 on the season (the only Ices being to a High School Alumni team), are the reigning State 2A Champs. Union played tiie Rams last year for the championship. They also duplicated their score of last years contest; Union only scored one run against them m the finals. ' But this year the Rams made half as many errors and twelve times as many runs, which is really the final factor in the game. The contest was played at the Utah Technical Colleges ballfield in Orem. It is a good sized field, with 360 feet down either side of the fence or 400 feet to centerfidd limit. straight-swa- y Several hits during the game would have been out of the park home runs in either of the teams home parks, but with the larger field they became doubles or triples. Both teams proved their hitting cap abilities, although the score , doesnt reflect it. Chad Richard got on base three times in four trips to the plate. One hit, by Brian Eldredge, was on the first pitch of the fourth inning that traveled between the fielders and garnered a double. But the major advantage the Rams had over the Cougars, waa South Seviers ability to take advantage of men on bases where the Cats werent able to do that The Cougar ball team will have four returning starters, claimed Coach Fddstead. But the loss of several good hitters and defenaive fielders will mean whoever coaches the squad next year will have to really work on those areas. It hasnt been decided yet if Fddstead will be the returning coach. State Finals will be played between South Sevier and Moab on Friday May 11, at 10:30 a.m. on BYUs baseball field in Provo. region tournament and will compete at Kent Ashton practices his volley to sharpen his skils for Union's tennis team.
