The business had to succeed, because if it failed, I had no more money to put into it, said Carolyn. She said the business venture has been a real lesson on how to combine hard work and business strategies. She said the real key to success is that of understanding of people. She said the ultimate benefits of owning your own business is that of making decisions. This was the same reason expressed by Judi Pummell, owner of Sew N Save, for the opening of a business. Judi has been in business in Vernal for 13 months and said that the opportunity to make her own decisions was the main reason she opened the business. I put in long hours and receive a great deal of Judi said she enjoys the constant contact with the customers and added that the people in Vernal have accepted her as a business person and she has had no problems respect. Discrimination sfill exists, but dwindling in this Women have long been a major force in the job market, but it hasn't been until the past few years that women have begun to assume jobs that were, for years, considered male" jobs. The jobs are many, and include such interests as truck driving, construction work, heavy equipment operation, jobs in the oil industry. One of the first things that leaps to mind when you consider a woman in these fields is that of discrimination. However, according to Tawna L. Clark, a former employee in some of these areas, this is not always the ease. I didnt have any problems which discrimination myself," said Tawna. When living in Idaho she drove truck, loader, drove operated a front-en- d water wagons, and operated jackhammers and shovels. She said there are often feelings that women don't have the mechanical knowledge to handle these jobs, but she added that this just isn't the case. When asked about the issue of physical ability, Tawna said the situation is fairly You either do it or you don't," she said. Tawna said the aspect of physical ability, at least from what she has seen, has not been that much of a factor. She pointed out that as long as a woman can do the job they will remain on the job. She said joking and making people welcome made her job very pleasant. I was sitting in an office doing a job I was for," said Linda. One day the boss called for a cup of coffee and I snapped. It was at this time that Linda entered the field of truck driving. She did point out, however, that it was not an easy task. She said you must obtain training before you can get hired, but you must get hired to get the training. She said it was a vicious circle, but one which can be broken. Linda said she obtained her training with an independent trucker and almost starved for a period of one year. She said her biggest advantage was her upbringing which emphasized an attitude of do it if your are interested. While that has been her biggest attribute, she said her size has probably been the biggest deterrent to her being hired. She said her first employers were ' skeptical and gave out impressions that the mate drivers would have to carry her. She said there are several problems encountered by female truck drivers. One of these is that it is sometimes difficult to get in the front door. Linda expressed a concern that there are still feelings that truck driving is not a job for a woman. Some of the other problems faced are caused by the women themselves. Often the women arent willing to put in the hours," Linda said. Linda said that of all the drivers on the roads today, about five percent of them are women. She added that probably 95 percent of - these are husband-wif- e teams. She said it is very difficult for the women to obtain the trucks. Linda stressed that these women, as well as others in typically male jobs really cant be classified. said They are all Linda. We are all basically mavericks in our own ways." She said most of these people want more of life than what is offered them. If it became no longer challenging, I would look for something else. Linda said there are still problems with sexual discrimination, but emphasized that if the small numbers of women continue to pursue the jobs, it' may open the doors for women later. Maybe it will become a, possibility for women to chase." and draperies. Nutt broke the male monopoly on telephone company jobs Parts longer have the job. Tawna did admit there always seemed to be a certain amount of discrimination, but added most of it was from other females. She said the only time she ever had any problems with men on the jobs was when she entered one job as an operator, the position providing her with supervisory authority over the laborers on the job. I learned to keep my mouth shut and let those responsible handle the problems, said Tawna. Linda Martin, an unemployed truck driver, expressed many of the same feelings.
