Show Since the dawn of time societies have looked upon male members of any household as those responsible for the care and security of the family unit Because of this social dictate, males have long been the only members of the family who have become gainfully employed. Such is no ' longer the case. Women are becoming more of a force in the area of employment. Between 1950 and 1980 a dramatic shift in labor force participation has taken place. In 1950 the labor force participation rate for women was 25.2 percent. In 1980, however, that figure had increased to 52.4 percent. The significance of these figures show that 'the ratio of women participating in the labor force has more than doubled in the past 30 years, with more than one third of the total increase coming in the 1970s. The highest of the participation rate gains were made in the 20 to 54 age group. In this group the participation rate increase ranged from 28 to 36 percentage points. The average participation rate in this group in 1980 was about 62 percent. The changes in labor force participation have not occurred only in the older age groups. 7 Those young women, ages have increased labor force participation dramatically in the 1970s. From a start of 25 percent participation in 1970, they have reached a 1980 participation rate of 48 percent. Women 18 19 have also increased their participation rales from 49 percent to 65 percent. With the dramatic gains by the various age groups of women, male labor force participation has seen a decline. Overall, between 1970 and 1980 the labor force participation rate for men declined from 82.5 percent in 1950 to 81.8 percent in 1980. In 1950 the overall male labor force participation rate exceeded that of women by 57.3 percentage points, but in 1980 the difference was only 29.4 percentage points. Most of this convergence has resulted from the more than doubling of the female participation rate over these years. The trends have followed the same patterns in Duchesne 16-1- County. In 1980 the total female population was 6,235. Of that total, the female labor force contained 1,634 women with 1,540 of them employed. The female population of Duchesne County comprised 49.7 percent of the total population and they accounted for 29.9 percent of those employed in the County. Women accounted for 35 percent of the unemployed and the unemployment rate for women in Duchesne County in 1980 was at 5.7 percent. Of all medical and health workers, women accounted for 68 percent in Duchesne County during 1980. Women comprised 67.2 percent of all teachers and 36.2 percent of the other professional workers. Women accounted for 75 percent of sales workers and 87.6 percent of all clerical workers. Only 8.1 percent of the jobs as craftsmen, foremen, and related work were held , by women. At the present time, more than 64 percent of this country's women of childbearing age are working. A recent study by the Ford Foundation predicts that by 1990 75 percent of the women in the United States will be working, most likely out of necessity. Many changes have been experienced by women in the labor force in the last 30 years, and women in Utah have experienced a faster rate than the nation, and now surpass the national rate. Utah's female participation participation rate is at 52.4 percent, compared to a national total of 51.6 percent. Utah men also continue to participate at higher rates than nationally. However, as women take more of a role, the male participation rate declines. The male participation rate in Utah is 81.8 percent, while the national rate is at 74.4 percent. Either way, the figures show that as women become more active in the labor force, men have tended to become less active. The purpose of this section is to express the views of some of the working women in the area. Why are they working? And why are they working in the jobs they are?
