This has caused a great deal of controversy and misunderstanding among contestants, coaches and judges, according to Scott McKendrick and J 'Wayne McArthur, and horse program leaders at Utah State University. They said the new style has been adopted in most of the Quarter Horse, Appaloosa and Paint shows. Yet some judges and a number of the contestants are still unclear on the new style; consequently, the and open youth horse shows have been a hodgepodge of new and old styles. To correct the situation, McKendrick and McArthur have authored a new extension publication, "Showmanship at Halter - Todays Style." It explains the new style for both the showman and the judges. It is expected to promote uniformity in the 1982 and subsequent horse shows throughout the state. A major aim in the new style is to position the showman so he can see both his horse and the judge and so the judge can better see the showman. This is important because in reality, the showman is exhibiting the horse and himself to the judge, not to the spectators, the authors emphasize. Copies of the pamphlet are being distributed to horse leaders. Others desiring copies may obtain them for 25 cents each from the Bulletin Room at USU, or from the 4-- H .
