The National Park Service is soliciting public input for an environmental assessment (EA I which may include a proposed new campground trail, upgrading the campground amphitheater and picnic area and rehabilitating Owachomo Bridge trail. The visitor center is the only location at NABR with water and public telephones. Campers will be able to access the visitor center via a direct trail instead of walking along the road. The campground amphitheater ia in need of repair. The benches and projection screen will be repluced. Lighting will be provided along the entrance path to assist visitors returning to their campsites. The current picnic facility is not adequate for thr needs of the visitor. Existing tables will be replaced, new tables added and shade structures erected The heavy use of the Owachomo Bridge trail has left it unstable and ended in places. Steps, witerbars and retaining walla will be replaced and added to make it a safer tail. The trail will be reduced in width from 6 to 3' and wood fences will be taken down. The monument is seeking suggestion from the public about issues to be addresaed as well as possible management alternatives for these four projects. The deadline for scoping comments is March 15, 2002. After that an environmental assessment will be developed, which will be available for public review and comment.
