Show THE SAN JUAN RECORD Wednesday, March 6, 2002 - Page 14 Broncos claim consolation title at 2A state basketball tourney The San Juan Bronco basketball team peaked at the right time, winning four of the last six games and earning the consolation championship in the 2A state basketball tournament. The Broncos defeated the North Summit Braves to claim a fifth place finish after a tremendous showing at the state tournament. San Juan opened the tournament against the eventual 61-4- Fishing report ABAJO MOUNTAINS. DWR Conservation Officer Randall Schcetz reports that all Blanding area lakes and reservoirs are beginning to thaw. Scheetz says he hasnt seen a single fisherman for some time. Blanding City is presently draining the conservation pool at Blanding Reservoir 4. Due to the changing lake level, conditions for ice fishing are expected to be hazardous. The reservoir will remain empty all year for an enlargement project (the dam is being raised 30 feet). Fish scheduled for stocking in Blanding Reservoir 4 will be added to the stocking quota for Blanding Reservoir 3. The game was close throughout, however Beavers most valuable player, Travis Bunk ker, hit shots in the final minute of the third quarter to break open what had been a close game. Beaver continued with a back-to-bac- int strong fourth quarter and cruised to a 1 victory over the Broncos. San Juan was led by Eldon Carroll and Farley Crofts, who each scored nine. The following day, the Broncos had a chance for a little payback to the Parowan Rams, who had defeated San Juan the previous week in the interregion tournament. 57-4- consolation championship game. The Broncos held Parowan to 28 percent shooting in the game and had many and easy shots while breaking the vaunted Parowan trap delay-up- s fense. Eldon Carroll led the Broncos with 14 points, and Crofts added 12. In the consolation game, the Broncos blew open a close game with a strong fourth ' quarter on the way to a 9 victory over North Summit. Luke Allen led San Juan with 17 points, Crofts added 13 and Carroll and Duncan Olson each scored ten. Bronco coach Derrick Farr was delighted with the showing of the team at the state tournament. We struggled early in the season, but proved that we can play with anyone, said Farr, who added, This is my funnest year coaching so far. We really had a great group of kids. 61-4- 63-4- 8. bounds. Sophomore Matt Torres came off the bench and had a strong game, throwing in 15 points. Chesley Tracy added five, Quin Dowell scored four, Ryan Sandberg and Emery Benally each scored three, and David Anderson added BROKEN WINDSHIELD? The Buckaroos jumped to an early lead against North Summit behind 21 first half points by Clint Adams. Monticello held a six point lead entering the fourth quarter, but the Braves came back and tied the score with 10 seconds remaining in the game. After several attempts, Monticello couldnt put the ball in the basket and fell to the Braves 65-6- 3. Adams was everywhere in the game, scoring 41 points and pulling down 11 rebounds in the final game of his high school career. Sandberg added 12, Anderson scored four, and Dowell and Benally each added three points. It was a disapponting close to the season for the Bucks, who went farther than any Buckaroo team in several years, but were unable to play a game in the last day of the 2A season. In the opening game, Monticello faced the eventual Juab Wasps state runner-up- , Juab jumped and fell to an early start and cruised to the win. After an initial Buckaroo basket, Juab went on an 18-- 1 run to take an 18-- 3 lead at the end of the first quarter. The Buckaroos made a 13-- 5 run midway through the second quarter to close the gap, however Juab once again extended their lead.
