Show Monticelio Council approves skate park concept by Anna Thayn After three years of discussion, a skate park in Monti-cell- o is finally moving forward. The Monticelio City Council voted unanimously to approve $1,000 to hire TVacy Reynolds, an architect in Durango, Colorado, to meet with the SK8 Club and anyone interested in developing a schematic in order to move forward with construction plans and develop a cost to begin seeking funds. The decision was met with applause from the capacity crowd, almost entirely made up of skate park supporters. Tauna Larsen presented the Council with a packet of information including plans, grant options, support letters from city police, school principals, the sheriff, business owners and private individuals, newsskateboard paper articles, club curriculum, and a Community Pride Award that the group received. 4-- H 4-- H Several members of the Council praise Larsen for the THE SAN JUAN RECORD Wednesday, March 6, 2002 Page 3 Monticelio rather than somewhere else. Resident Rex Buckley Jensen approached the Council asking that they shop at home when seeking contract work before hiring. Jensen referenced the photographer hired to photograph the golf course last year. He presented the Council an extensive resume of his photography-related experience and told them of his collection of over 25,000 photos of the area. Jensen asked the Council to take into consideration his access to the course at any time, as opposed to someone from Oregon who must travel a great distance and doesnt have the luxury of taking photos at opportune times. The City reported that the photographer was hired through a joint effort with the San Juan County Travel Council and the contract was up in the spring. They are not in an exclusive deal, so another photographer could be hired if needed. The Council said they will work harder to shop at home when possible. Councilman Steve Young brought the Council information from the Economic Development Committee. A budget is on hold until after a March 7 community meeting in order to properly assess needs. A $2,500 contract with Consultant Paul Redd was denied by the Council, since the Association of Local Governments and the State of Utah have offered free consulting assistance for the meeting. The Council reminded the public that the meeting is a chance for citizens to bring ideas and make a plan that "belongs to the people. That way they become committed to do what is needed to accomplish that plan, said Pehrson. The site for a new City shop was approved, after some discussion. The original location at 5th South and 1st East was the choice of Councilman Pete Steele, due to its location in the City, thus keeping the employees closer to town where they can be seen. The remainder of the Council voted to approve a new location on the old DOE site on Clay Hill Drive. The new location has several amenities, including water and power, that the 1st East site does not have. There also is plenty of room on the DOE site for more development. As funds arc budgeted for the shop, the project will proceed. The Council rejected a resolution to transfer the cable television franchise, stating they will delay signing the transfer until the cable company tells the Council about their plan of operation, im- provements and what they can offer the City. The Planning and Zoning Administrator job is being advertised, with a March 15 closing date. The City hopes to fill the job in early April. |
