| Show SHERIFF TO STOP RIOTS IN CHICAGO police of the windy city find elves unable to cope with the strike situation SCORES INJURED EVERY DAY two thousand deputies will be en rolled in an endeavor to protect life and property chicago sheriff thomas E bar rett ot cook county will take active control 0 the strike situate situa tn so much pressure has been brought to bear upon him and upon mayor dunn by men who believe their interests to be seriously imperiled by the con betant rioting in the streets that has been compelled to swear in a large force of deputies and hakea ta kea alve steps to do away with the present disorder two hundred deputies were sworn in thursday afternoon at the office of sheriff barreta and it Is be lieveld 2 have now been enrolled A committee of prominent business men headed by john shedd ot mar shall feld co on thursday took steps to lay the situation before the governor and declare that conditions are such that the militia Is impera lively needed the chicago clearing house association adopted sweeping resolutions declaring that the riots in the streets were constantly increase ing in fury and have gone beyond the power of the civil authorities ot the city and county to control it was therefore the opinion ol 01 the of the clearing house that troops should be called out the sheriff la determined to take the situation in band beclar ang that until he has done so he will not be justified in calling for the militia notwithstanding the constant fight ing in the streets and the numerous attacks made upon nonunion men the large dry goods houses and whole sale grocers report that they were steadily making progress and ing their shipments while the strikers are equally confident ol 01 success there was less disturbance thurs day in the wholesale district but tho fighting went on with its usual persist ence and viciousness in the heart ot the fashionable shopping district A number of non union men were clubbed and beaten and their wagon guards and the police retaliated with vigor upon the rioters in every in stance the crowds were dispersed after a brief scrimmage which wa however in several cases ot a rather sharp character the number of injured was from all accounts about the same as that of the previous two days about 30 or 40 men have been cared tor at thoa various hospitals and there are fully as many more who have received med leal attendance and whose names are not known to the police |
