THE SPECIAL 4-- by Quicksilver I really dont care about Buster Keaton, a middle-age- d Salt Lake City woman casually remarked, Im here to see Gaylord Carter. Two people sitting directly in front of the couple winced, but for the majority of the audience in the Capitol Theater, the main attraction that night would be a' theater organist named Gaylord Carter. The reality of that night tends to numb a film lover. Buster Keaton is a silent comedy superstar. His work may have been equaled by an elite group of silent stars, but no me, not even Chaplin, has been able to make a better comedy. Hence, when THE GENERAL came to the Capitol Theater, I sold my blood so I could afford to see it. And, of course, it was worth it. THE GENERAL is basically the same story as THE GREAT LOCOMOTIVE CHASE. A group of Northern spies steal a steam engine from the Confederates at the height of the Civil War. The difference is that instead of a force of Confederate soldiers pursuing the train, the Yankees are chased by a lone engineer Keaton. The odds are a bit unfair. The North didn't have a chance. Keatons humor is unique in that his straight man was usually a prop. The General is, in fact, a ballet de le locomotive, as he wrings every possible bit of humor from a ten ton iron horse, and makes it look so easy that one tends to forget that he actually shot it on a speeding locomotive without the aid of a stunt man. If some of the scenes are spine tingling, its because the danger is real. But even the most dangerous situation ends with a laugh. Keaton was a comedian above all else. And Gaylord Carter? He was excellent as well. His mastery of DISCOVER - Rye bread 4 Swiss cheese slices his media, the theater pipe organ, was apparent in all of the solos that were played between the shorts and the reel changes. His program ranged from a tribute to Scott Joplin and ragtime music to selections from the opera CAR-MEIBest of all, he didnt try to overpower the silent films but N. became a part of them, a true sign of a great theater organist. The audience was soon engrossed in the film. At the end of THE GENERAL, the audience applauded for five - maybe even ten - minutes. Gaylord Carter might have taken a bow, but it was really Buster Keatons night. Humphrey Bogart returns to the Park City Opera House in the 1946 classic THE BIG SLEEP. The film was directed by one of Hollywoods finest directors, Howard Hawks. Hawks style of directing was a ' straightforward, style that relied upon the strength of the narrative (plot) more than e cinematic that often clutters up the films of lesser directors. His films are active and violent to the extent that they are often considered brutal razzle-dazzl- studies of masculinity. Hawksf plots often pit the weak cowarA .against the strong tough guy. Speaking of strong tough gyjrs, has there ever been a better guy than Humphrey Bogart? Bogart had the great fortune of working with some of the best directors that Hollywood has tough been able to produce, but his acting style was typically Bogart no matter who directed him. Im not sure if the roles were created for Bogart or if Bogart made any role look like it was made for him, but whenever he appears in a film, he is the focal point around which the other characters revolve. THE BIG SLEEP is the combination of the tough guy director and the tough guy. vL - mustard 4 Polish sausages dill pickle slices Spread mustard.
