Sprouts are even more exciting than an outdoor garden! Ive meant to try them for a long time, but havent because of inertia and thinking it was complicated. Actually, nothing could be more easy. rt Heres what I did. I took a jar plus the ring you screw on when canning. Then I was supplied with a piece of flexible plastic mesh by a friend (like the net one used to use for formals). You could also use cheesecloth, a piece of screen cut to size or even an old piece of nylon anything small mesh and washable. This completed the materials needed to grow the sprouts. Next, I got some clean alfalfa seeds (from health food stores) and put two tablespoons of them one-qua- Noise pollutes, too. in the quart jar. You arent going to believe this is nearly enough, but it is. Dont use more, or youll have to eat sprouts three meals a day. Then, I put in about three INSPECTION STICKER EXPIRES THIS MONTH I THOR Thor, Rick Princes Saint Bernard, is this weeks Coalition Canine. Now in the September of his life, the large, majestic creature is experiencing the incapacitating effects of old age. Weak in the rear limbs and hard of hearing, the pedigreed giant still manages to respond to his masters commands, timidate intruders, and beg in- at- tention and affection. Although not in pain but slowed by the years, the son of Bruno of Snow Summit lumbers to meet anyone approaching the Prince home. We were informed that Thors aggressiveness is quickly abated by gentle words but this is not extremely encouraging in light of his hearing problem. But, the thunder of Thor turns to puppy whimpers once an acquaintance is established. Melbourne Armstrongs Chesapeake Retriever Mr. Brown is the only dog to continually provoke Thor, and he continually pays the price. Fond of die great outdoors, the Saint Bernard usually forsakes his two-roodog house to sleep under the stars. In fact, his thick fur coat used to serve as sleeping quarters for two kittens. His advanced age has diminished his mobility but Thor continues to project the regality inherent in his blood and breed. m times as much water as seeds, put the mesh over the top of the jar, screwed on the ring to hold the mesh in place and put the jar in a warmish cupboard overnight. The following morning I poured I one out the water and rinsed the seeds (still in the jar with mesh cover on) with fresh water. Back into the cupboard they went, this time with the jar inverted in a bowl so it would be upside down (xi a slant and the sprouts could drain (to keep from rotting). I repeated this rinsing every four to six hours for about four days and voila! sprouts. We just had some on lettuce with salad dressing, and they are delicious. The taste is unbelievably fresh, crisp and mild. I know a lot of people are growing sprouts nowadays, but after eating them, I dont understand why everyone isnt using them. Lazy like me, I guess. A couple more comments on this first experiment: The purpose of putting the seeds in the cupboard is to keep them in the dark. If the little sprouts have a lot of light, they will turn green and get a strong flavor. These first ones we tried that were so tender were about an inch and a half long, quite pale with little yellowish leaves but crisp. Try sprouts. Use them in salads, steamed, In omelets or in Chinese dishes. It really is Try it, youll like it. Later on, Ill write more about cost, nutrition and other seeds to use. If You Have A Let Us In On It!
