Show 9 THE NATIONAL ENTERPRISE, SEPTEMBER 21, 1977 The Bottom Line by Harvey MerWey Most of us listen to folks who are unprepared. We hear them at conferences and all those other meetings we attend. Paying attention is part of life in the organization.. listening to teachers from kindergarten on until we finally conclude there exists only a handful of people who say anything worthwhile. Maybe speakers and trainers and entertainers are like a lot of company presidents. They fall somewhere on a continuum ranging from good to bad from the few who have done their homework to the ones who have done none. Then there are those who walk on stage cold having put very few thoughts into what they are about to say, spending time mumbling and telling us how unprepared they are and apologizing for being in that awful state. To which we can only respond, "Why are you saying the obvious?" Leading out with lanquage or any kind of presentation involves some common management functions: organizing, planning and control. The marshalling of words long before you deliver them and planning how they should fit together can actually make you familiar with what youre going to say. Controlling your tongue so you dont come on like an idiot can be helpful in avoiding the impression you have nothing upstairs. Sounding like you have any empty head can mean less bucks. Sentences improve people. Its how they are said and how you manage your mind. Being in command of a group and having done little to prepare for it comes through loud and clear. The most obvious remedy is preparation. Reading a lot is another distinct antidote. The least obvious is writing out your words. Few presidents take to the pen even though it can mean more exactness. But therein lies the origin of the dilemma... few people lay out their thoughts in cursive, and that is why so many arc seen as vague and unsubstantial. Precise expression has its links with money because money talks. Wouldnt you like to be able to come across just as potently?
