Between 1912 and 1976, the company spent $1.2 billion to construct new power plants. During the next five years, says Grant Pendleton, company spokesman, it plans to spend $1.5 billion. f j People in Utah Power & Lights service area are using 8 percent more elecPendleton tricity annually He estimates the says. will million $310 utility spend on construction this year. ;; V'; Mountain Fuel Supply is Co. growing at a rate of about 5.3 percent annually, and expects to continue at that level, according to John Crawford, Jr., executive vice The company president. expects to spend about $60 million in utility and nonutility capital expenditures this year, and expects to keep its work force stable, he says. Mountain Bell will spend about $80 million in Utah in 1977, according to spokesman Chuck Henry, up from last years $71 million. We expect to be spending almost $1.5 million a week, Henry summarizes. Most utility capital expenditures seem to be growing at the rate similar to that established by the population they serve. Thayne Robson estimates the Wasatch Front will see 85 percent of the population growth occuring in the state this year, with concentration in the southern half of Salt Lake and Davis counties and all of Utah County. s 4 If the alunite project breaks in Milford, we could see a population increase there this year, and coal mining in Carbon and Emery Counties will probably generate the same level of growth this year as last year, Robson says. Expanding Work Force : s S '4 Job Service is estimting 25,500 new people will be hired in the state this year, bringing the total work force of the state to 529,000. While last year saw dramatic gains in the construction industry (14.3 percent jump in the number of people employed), this year sees no such radical movement in the labor market, according to Job Service. Analysts predict both mining and construction will lead the way, each with over 7 percent growth rate, and the federal government tailing with only a .5 percent gain. Job Service sees the trade industry expanding by 6.1 percent, the service industry growing by 5.8 percent, manufacturers of durable goods increasing their work force by 5.7 percent, and finance and real estate firms growing by 5.6 percent. It sees the total work force growing at a 5.3 percent rate. The optimistic outlook projected by Job Service and shared by most everyone else in the state, could be slightly altered by a severe drought this year. Ski resorts, related industries and rv -i changing consumer attitudes and social functions all must ultimately affect the economic performance of the multitude of small and large businesses whose owners want to participate in the great year of 1977. The crystal ball of Utahns notwithstanding, their desire will probably help make that great year happen. Ts rV. agriculture could suffer an economic depression. And, since Utah is only part of a whole, its economic condition must ultimately depend on that of the rest of the nation. Decisions made in Washington, weather patterns throughout the world, Ttjk 4.
