According to Paul Gaines, airport director, the former contract has changed significantly. This is the first time the agencies have two contracts instead of one," Gaines explained. They now have a concession contract, giving them the right to operate a counter concession in ther terminal, and another contract to lease the land for their service centers. The two contracts will terminate in five years. The concession contract calls for the agencies to pay the airport 10 percent of gross sales or a specified minimum, whichever is greater. The charge for counter space has increased from $6.25 to $10.36 per square foot per year, Gaines said. Minimum concession fees charged the car renters are as follows: Hertz $200,000; Avis $100,000; tional Na- $80,000; Budget $60,000; and Dollar $60,000. The former contract contributed a total of $260,000 in revenue for the airport; the new contract will bring the terminal $500,000. The new contracts also call for agencies to post a d bond for of their annual guaranteed minimum fees. And they allow agents to operate jitneys, transporting customers from the airline terminals to the service areas. This clause eliminates the need for a ready one-thir- car area near the terminal, The jitney service is ex pected to take effect next month. h The negotiafive-mont- tions for the presently contract also included talk about obtaining counter space in the planned second terminal, due to be finished in December 1978, Gaines said. We didnt talk about specific rates, but the agencies agreed to occupy and staff the counters, Gaines explained. Paul Taylor, franchise agreed-upo- n owner for National, said the greatest impact he has felt from airport growth is the cost of operating multiple "We have three units. different locations at the airport, so we have addi- tional overhead staffing he explained. Copies of the contracts must be distributed among all franchise owners across the country, and returned to the airport authority before they are final.
