Show The National Enterprise , October 20, 1976 Page two Agricultures Appetite for Energy Must be Satisfied DENVER The key issue facing this nation is our dependency on energy and the ability of our energy industry to meet the challenge, Bill Brier, director of energy resources for the National Council of Farmer Cooperatives, told a Denver audience last week. The Washington, D.C., farm association executive, speaking before the annual meeting of the Rocky Mountain Oil and Gas Continued economic Association, said, growth will be accompanied by increased demand for energy. Brier stressed agricultures appetite for Over the last three decades, he energy. said, the 240 percent increase in corn yields has been accompanied by a 310 percent increase in energy to produce that corn. Agriculture consumes almost 15 percent of this nations total energy supplies, Brier told the group. Unfortunately, heavy dependence on energy from fossil fuels makes agriculture more vulnerable to fuel shortages than the nation as a whole, he added. He emphasized the most critical need farmers have for energy is assurance of its constant availability. Agriculture is not an industry that can withstand cutbacks or curtailments of energy. It is different from other industries in that lost production cannot be made up. Brier stressed that fuel needs of agriculture are unique in that specific fuels are needed at specific times for specific At that time, Brier said, purposes. many farm products are not in a form desirable for human consumption and must be processed to be edible. Other products are highly perishable in the raw state and must be canned, frozen or dried to make them storable. This takes fuel. Because of dwindling domestic supplies of natural gas and crude oil, it w'ould be logical for our government to lend its efforts to the development of domestic synthetic fuels industry, Brier commented. Due to the long lead time involved in the construction and operation of its first generation commercial scale plants, this effort should begin immediately. The agriculture official said use of lead antiknocks in gasoline lowers by five to six percent our total oil consumption. He believes the Federal Environmental Protection Agency regulations forcing refiners to reduce lead additives in gasoline is the wrong approach. Alternate technologies permitting the use of lead gasoline and still accomplishing lead emmission goals should be considered, he added. Brier said proposals by Congress to break up large oil companies would also work adversely for agriculture. Since most markets are limited to only tw'o or three major suppliers, divestiture legislation might force major companies to concentrate their marketing efforts on urban centers at the expense of lower margin rural markets, he observed.
