Show 22 THE CITIZEN The Tintic of the Future Greater Than the Past Famous Mining Camp Comes Into Prominence Through Diligent Efforts of Those Who Had Faith in Utahs Mountains. New Developments Are OpUung a Greater Store of Wealth Than Ever Before Much Capital Available for New Oopportunities. When the Tintic Mining District of Utah is mentioned, many people fail to grasp the extent of the area of territory comprised in that name. The Tintic Mining District, as an area, where are deposited the wealth of gold, silver, and lead, has so far no particular set boundary, for, as time goes on and capital is available, the boundaries of the Tintic district keep extending, and its final terminals are yet to be determined. Fifty or sixty years ago, ore was first discovered in the Tintic district and since that time numerous mines have been developed and have added their wealth to the world. Years ago, the familiar names of the Centennial Eureka, Mammoth, Grand Central, Bullion Beck, Gemini, Eureka Hill, and other properties were thought to comprise the area in which ore existed. Time went on, they came to the Colorado, Iron Blossom, Sioux, May Day, Uncle Sam, and other properties, and from time to time the eyes of many men were cast on the east portion of the district, but almost as one they came to the conclusion that there was no ore deposits. This opinion was generally brought about by reason of the fact that there were no surface indications of ore and no one had the courage to put up the money to sink below the porphyry overflow on the chance that ore would be developed. To E. J. Raddatz belongs the credit of having the courage and the nerve to develop the Tintic Standard, a property that has made a' record that rivals any of the previous mines of the Tintic district, and is today operating with many years of life', before it Some $40,000,000 worth of ore has been produced and the company has distributed close to . in dividends. Even after the Tintic Standard had definitely de$10,000,000 fined that Tintic had a greater area, many mining men endeavored to draw the conclusion that the ore in the Tin-ti- e Standard was in a particular basin or bowl, and did not extend to further boundaries. The Eureka Lily, Eureka Bullion, Big Hill, Silver Shield and others were started. When a point was reached whereby the operators were becoming discouraged the geologists of Anaconda Copper company, the through its subsidiary, the International Smelting company of Utah, geologized the east portion of the Tintic district and decided to develop what is now known as the North Lily. By diamond drill they started operations, but the diamond drills did not strike ore, they only disclosed formations that are kindred to ore depositions. Then, with capital available, a blind drift was run from Tintic : ; Standard, some 3,000 feet, when they struck the ore in the North Lily. Something like 140 men are now at work, erecting buildings, installing the cable tram that connects the mine with the railroad spur and every detail in mine development and production has been given careful attention, so that shortly the North Lily will be shipping approximately 200 tons of ore daily. An inspection of the mine demonstrates that it is a veritable bonanza. From the 600 to the level, ore is in evidence, and that of high grade, so that the net profit per ton will be substantial. It is estimated by the management that the present known ore reserves are approximately 275,000 tons. How much more will be developed in the future is, of course, impossible to state with certainty, but there is nothing apparent in the geological conditions that would indicate other than the fact that these ore bodies will be increased as further development pro850-fo- ot ceeds. The Eureka Lily is a new development that is attracting considerable attention. It is controlled by the Chief Consolidated, one of the largest operating companies in the district. They have opened the ore, and although it is in the early stages of development, they are now shipping, and by reason of the North Lily shaft being in the vicinity, the outlook for increased shipments is assured. The ground which used to be known as the Tintic Bullion is now part of the Chief Consolidated, and according to geologists, there is considerable certainty that the North Lily ore bodies will dip into this property. Within a short time, according to report, development of this property will be started by a drift from the North Lily shaft, and later on this drift or an offshoot from it will be driven into Eureka Bullion to tap the known ore bodies. In the same section of the district is the property of the Silver Shield Mining and Milling company, where active, intelligent development is being carried on. This company has expended thousands of dollars in its preliminary operations, and today is working two shifts a day. The problem of getting the ore in this property is no greater than has been experienced by other successful comfurnished The formation panies. every geological condition for ore discoveries, and in the opinion of miners, acquainted with the property, it will not be long until this property will be added to the list of producers that have made the Tintic district famous. The Eureka Standard, controlled by the Tintic Standard Company, is pursuing consistent development. This work has been going on for several years, but the geological conditions are promising and the management is confident that ultimately their effort will be rewarded with success. The Iron King, another property under the control of the Tintic Standard, has the same intensive development work going on. The different objectives have not yet been reached, but there is confidence that here another producing mine will be opened. Thus it is that all over the district there is more or less activity. North Standard, Lehi Tintic, Selma, Crown Point, all are active, and negotiaions are pending in connection with other properties that will result in a greater activity in the Tintic district than has ever been known in its history. Within the past few months southeast from the Tintic Standard were discovered formations so positive in their character as to indicate similarity of geological conditions to those prevailing in the east section of the district. The wonder seems to be how this part of the district could so long remain without receiving attention, and it looks as if mining men with a knowledge of the Tintic district suddenly awoke to the probabilities of this section. After thoroughly geologizing this ground capital was quick to see the opportunity and now there is a veritable hum of industry at the Tintic Giant, which is putting down two shafts, the Tintic Lead and the Tintic Eagle, which is reported as going to start operations. Standing in this country one can readily picture the probabilities that are going to create a system of ore producers that will extend to a greater distance than ever before in the boundary of the Tintic district. It is safe to say that the advancement in the science of geology is eliminating the if1' from the mining industry. The average person does not realize the immense strides that have been made in the study of geology, whereas, years ago, the prospector had to discover ore indications on the surface before he would attempt development, today the expert geologists, up to the minute, look for formations kindred to ore deposits and thus succeed in indueng capital to be put to work. That is a great factor in the present development of the Tintic district and coupled with this is the wonderful strides in metallurgy, ores that years ago were discarded, because they were not high grade ore by reason of a silicious or sulphur content, today they are desired by the smelters. Capital is more available for properties with immense tonnage of low grade ore than it was years ago, for developing high grade propositions, and these two factors are the basic foundations of the advancement of the mining industry today. Utah will, in the next few years, startle the world with its flow of wealth into the channels of trade. While this article has confined itself to a small area of the Tintic district, we must not forget that we are yet going to hear from other portions of the district known as West Tintic, South Tintic and Northwest Tintic sections that with intelligent development will add to the wealth of the world for the next hundred years. Theres a Difference in Oils ONE of the most vital so far as performance is concerned, is the ability of oil to withstand the terrific heat inside the motor. Flash Point is the technical term for ability to stand up under heat. In a recent test, the U. S. Bureau of Standards found that VICO has flash the highest thirteen of the point leading American oils tested. Vico gives you an extra margin of safety against the effects of heat in your motor. For the correct grade of Vico for your car, consult --the chart at service stations and dealers. Manufactured & Guaranteed by UTAH OIL REFINING CO. Salt Lake City |
