Show THE CITIZEN We are glad to correct this error and exonerate the MEMORIAL DAY versity from any participation in this matter. UEXT WEDNESDAY will mark the sixtieth anniversary of 1 Memorial Day. It was not until after the Civil war that this day was generally observed in the United States. The tradition is that a German soldier who fought in our army, once made the remark that in Germany it was the custom to scatter flowers over the graves of the dead. It is believed this was the remark that started, the Decoration Day (as it was then called) movement in this country. At any Tate, early in May, 1868, ' Adjutant General N. P. Chipman conferred with National Commander John A. Logan concerning the inauguration of the custom of strewing flowers on the graves of the soldiers all over the Union. General Logan approved of the idea and immediately issued an order naming the 30th day of May, 1868, for the purpose of strewing with flowers, or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades, who died in defense of their country during the late rebellion, and whose bodies now lie in almost in the land. ; Ever d . every city, village, or since this date the custom has been followed of decorating the graves of- the soldiers and our loved ones who have departed from this earth. Memorial Day is a beautiful and most significant occasion. It should be kept sacred and tenderly revered by both old and . hamlet-churchyar- Um. b DAM IS SAVED r Another dam disaster is barely averted through the ef forts of heroic men and women when a big break in the Scofiel dam was averted. This huge body of water if released woul have nearly wiped out seven cities, destroyed several thongan homes, probably drowned many people and would have devaste thousands of acres of fertile farm lands and all crops mine Farmers and their employes from the surrounding cotmtr rushed to the scene of trouble and the Rio Grande cleared it tracks and hastened emergency crews and materials for the n pair o fthe dam. The leak was brought under control and noi the engineers say that the dam will hold. All the summer1 water is stored there for a large farming district. Next fa the dam can be repaired properly. The work cannot be don now unless all the water is drained from the dam and that won ruin the farmers. toe Bt ph tb du fit du du of Thi m an mei - (ill INHUMAN FIEND has of The other day a little girl thirteen years of age was give a severe inhuman beating by her mother with a cat--o nine-t leaving many nasty scars on the childs back. Much time was taken up in ironing out political scandals, and during the last few days of the session many of the most important bills were rushed through, many of them only to be vetoed by President Coolidge and as many passed over his veto. In vetoing the McNary-Hauge- n bill, alleged to be sailing under a well camouflaged farmers relief measure, President Coolidge in no uncertain language showed up its flaws and emphatically announced that the bill could never bring the relief to the farmers as advertised. President Coolidge has conclusively shown and proven that he at all times guards well the interests of the people of the United States, and if he has political ambitions they in no way stand in the way when it comes to deciding between the right and the wrong. He will go down in history as the greatest business president we have had in this nation since the early days of our Colonial Presidents when the treasury had to be well guarded to prevent money being rolled out of the treasury in pork barrels.
