Show McKay selects wilderness areas chunk of I'lah Congressman Gunn McKay today pinpointed eleven Utah sites totaling over '' million acres the Bureau of Land Management is studying for inclusion on America's growing roll of designated w ilderness areas. McKay said the eleven areas, clustered in the south end of i he st ate, total 256.730 arres and bring the total of Utah areas now under active consideration hy the Agriculture and Interior Departments to 16: The Forest Service's Peak and High I'intah areas; three Utah National parks by the Park Service. Canyonlands. Capitol Reef and Arches; and the eleven sites on BLM lands. And that's just the camel's nose." said McKay. Shell Oil Company has volunteered to construct the frame and Plateau Oil Inc. will order the sheet metal and prepare it for painting. Paula has collected donations of $500. Jay C. The eleventh area. Paria Canyon, is 27.515 acres and straddles the border. According to McKay, any roadless parcel of public land over 5.000 acres in size with wilderness characteristics" will iume up for review and in the ease of the smaller BLM areas, additional acreages would he addl'd to bring them to the 5,000 acre limit should they meet the Bureau's standards in other regards. McKay said that the eleven BLM areas mentioned so far are currently primitive and natural areas' and are prioritized for earliest review. He said the study may take approximately 18 months. The first area for review, and the largest, is Escalante Canyon. McKay recommended that Secretary Andrus ask the U. S. Geologic and Mineral Survey to determine which of these proposed wilderness areas have the greatest mineral reserves so that they may be given a higher priority for Since Congress has to resolution. approve these wilderness designations, it would be helpful for us to know what other resources would be locked up during the study and for how long." McKay emphasized that each of these would he wildernesses will be examined on their own merits and not as a package. There are some that may well be entitled to wilderness protection, but there may also be others that should be used by the public for other than wilderness enjoyment" It's too early to tell what the implications of all this will be, and I think we should wait before making final judgments. BLM people have assured me they will conduct public hearings on their proposals before submitting them to Congress. That should give Utahns plenty of time to react and speak their minds. I hope they will." Utah--Arizo- na G.Lhome loan interest high interest in GI home loans record pace in March, the Veterans Administration revealed today. VA received 71,136 appraisal requests in March, the highest monthly total in Wide cunt i nued at a nearly 21 years. The March 1977 figure was 22 percent higher than February's and 12 percent above the March 1976 totals. AVA appraisal of a house is a first step to applying for a VA guaranteed loan. March's heavy volume pushed the total appraisal requests received for the first half of fisral year 1977 to 328,608. This is 15 percent higher than the same period a year ago. Applications for GI home loans also reflected the surge. VA received 40,979 applications in March, 35 percent above February and 16 percent higher than a year ago. Loan applications during the first half of FY 1977 totaled 205,256, 22 percent over the same six months a year ago. VA officials ban guaranty attribute some of the new business to a 1975 law that eased GI loan eligibility. Prior to January 1, 1975, a veteran who had once used his GI loan eligibility could have it restored only under special circumstances. VA had to be relieved of liability and the property had to have been disposed of for "compelling reasons," a VA spokesman said. Congress removed the "compelling reasons restriction, allowing entitlement to be restored if the property his been disposed of and the loan satisfied. This means most veterans with service since September 19. 1940, are potentially eligible for a GI loan. The law also provided the original veteran's liability be removed automatically and eligibility restored if another veteran purchases the proper'. and substitutes his VA loan eligibility for that of the seller. Since June 22, 1944, more than 9.5 million veterans and service members have borrowed $129 billion under the VA The VA loan guaranty program. guarantees a loan up to 60 percent or a maximum of $17,500. Twister lands in Duchesne A tiny freak twister touched down in Duchesne city last Wednesday just long enough to upset a bicyclist and twist trash cans in the Government Community here. Mrs. Linda Swenson reports that she and her four year old son Mike were pedaling home from shopping around noon when they saw a fairly large whirlwind approaching them down 150 South, carrying rocks, sand and other small debris. She got off immediately and held Mike who was riding in a childs seat on the back of the bicycle. When the twister hit it was of sufficient velocity to lift the front wheel of the bike as high as her shoulder, turn them in a complete circle and pit both passengers with sand and rocks.
