Show I STANDARD July 21 . 1977 UINTAH BASIN Phone news items to722-5i31- Old timers tournaments scheduled "Recreation is for everyone including those who are about to retire, those who are already retired or those who are just plain tired, according to Steve Bailey, Recreation Director for Roosevelt City. Roosevelt Recreation has set up several recreational tournaments to assist senior citizens get together to show each other and everyone else that theyve still got what it takes. Among those activities designed principally for the older set are checkers, horseshoes, RECREATION TOURNAMENT Ralph Shields and Merrill Bertoch turn their hand at a game of chess while Steve Bailey, Recreation Director for Roosevelt City explains the finer points of the game. Tournaments in all activities are presently being sponsored by the recreation department. Fenns beats Neola in league softball With the season half fiver, places are pretty well set within the softball ranks. LCL remains unbeaten with wins over lee Cream and the Outlaws. D & M Oil (the Wild Bunch) and Fenn's are tied for second after nine games. D & k M had games in Ft. Duchesne against the Police and Ft. Duchesne. They beat the Police Tuesday but narrowly defeated a surprisingly strong Ft Duchesne team by a mere two runs on Saturday. column Fenn's stayed in the one-lowhey they beat Neola in a seesaw battle Tuesday night Neola allowed three in the first but came back with four in their half. Fenn's hit again with 4 more in the second but held Neola to' only two and each team traded two in the third. Then with the score 9 to 8 Fenn's tightened their belts and allowed only three more Neola players to reach basethrough the last four innings. In the mean time Fenn's tallied two in the fourth, two more in teh fifth and another in the sixth to win 14 to back-to-bac- ss 8. Uintah Freight stands alone at fourth with easy wins over the Ute Tribe and UCL Neola fought their way back to fifth replacing Big 0 in that slot. Neola, after losing to Fenn's, started out against Bump's by scoring their first five batters. It looked like a runnaway but Bump's regrouped and retired nine out of the next ten hitters and tallied seven runs of their own to lead 7 to 6 after three innings. Neola scored two more in the fourth while Bump's got 1 in the fifth to tie the score 8 to 8. Neola then scored four in the sixth with two out, held Bumps, and scored another in their half of the sixth to lead by 5. Bump's then scored their first four batters and put a fifth on second. But then faltered, made some mistakes to give Neola the win by one at 13 to 12. Big 0 dropped from fifth to tie for sixth with the Police with a win over Hall Trucking 21 to 16 and a loss to the Police. The Police moved up from 8th to a tie for sixth. Big 0 could only muster single runs in the first, third and fifth. The Police, who had allowed only five Big 0 batters gin rummey. Winners named for Duchesnes tennis tourney Duchesne's first tennis tournament was deemed a success by those in charge. Even though there was not a large turn-ou- t of spectators, the competition and playing was very good. Linda Greep and Mike McCreery were in charge of the tennis tournament this year and are hoping that this tournament will turn into an annual event for Duchesne. Ice Cream beat the Rascals 16 to 5 after losing to LCL, the Ute Tribe lost to Uintah Freight and forfeited to Fenn's and Bottle Hollow bowed to Hall e Young Adult activities set Trucking. In one of the funnest games of the season the Little Rascals joined the winners ranks Tuesday with a come-frobehind win over arch rival ,UCI to determine who would come out of the cellar. UCI started out with 26 runs in four innings and allowed the Rascals only 10. Then, trailing by 16, the Rascals rallied for 11 runs in the fifth and 11 more in the sixth and allowed only four more runs to UCI to win 32 and 30. m Swim meet at Duchesne There will be an open swim meet in next Saturday, July 30 at 1 p.m. Competition categories will be set for both men an dwomen in three age groups, 6 and under, 7 through 18, and 18 and over. Ribbons will be awarded in each division for the following classes: breast strokes, back crawl, butterfly and free style. Swimmers in the middle age group Duchesne beginning Thursday, July 21 is sports night for Roosevelt Young Adults. Meet at Ballard Ward Cultural Hall for the activity. Contact the ward or stake leaders for more information. Friday and Saturday, July 22 and 23 a trip to Mantf Pageant is planned. All young adults who plan on going should meet at Roosevelt First Ward Church at 2:30 p.m. They will attend the pageant then a swimming activity will follow in the Ephraim Pool. They will spend the night at Ephraim City Park. Anyone going should bring a sack lunch for Friday evening, their swimming suit and sleeping bags. Tuesday, July 26, a service project is being planned. They will bake apple pies together, then deliver them to single, elderly people in the two stakes. More ' information will be given later. Friday and Saturday, July 29, and 30, will be an over-nigcamping trip in the High Uintahs at the West Fork Canyon past Whiterocks. More details will be given later. Athletes' Vision College football and basketball players have poorer vision than will compete in two-yea- r age categories. There will be no charge for entrants, and competition is limited to Duchesne area residents. I Basin teacher on Folk culture faculty conference The Fife Conference on Western American Folk Culture will be offered at Utah State University in Logan. The purpose of this conference is to develop understandings about unique local culture and people and to preserve folk traditions and folkways. The conference should be of special interest to teachers, historians, and those generally interested in the American West Conference participants will be able to both observe and participate in folklife demonstrations. Craftsmen and artisans will demonstrate folk crafts, and in many cases, conference participants will actually participate in the making of soap, corn husk dolls, and other folk crafts. The conference faculty represents a wide range of talents and expertise-frofolk tales and legends to folk crafts and material folk culture. Three of the eight faculty members include Wally Goddard, J. Barre Toelken, and Austin Fife. Wally Goddard, a teacher in the Uintah School District, has attempted to instill in his students a sense of pride in local cultural heritage by collecting folklore. Since starting the program in 1975, three volumes of TAMARACK have been produced. This local publication contains folklure and material folk culture. Goddard will demonstrate how he has involved students in a special "teachers and teaching section of the conference. J. Barre Toelken, an alumnus of Utah State University, now teaches at the University of Oregon where he has developed one of the best folklore and folk culture programs in the United States. He is also a folklorist, medieval scholar, and folks in ger. He has been the editor of the Journal of American Folklore and regional editor of Western Folklore. He has also recorded two albums of folk songs. Austin and Alta Fife have made numerous field trips, collecting lore, reminiscences, anecdotes and tales, and material aspects of folk culture. His interests have been wide and varied, ranging from cowboy songs and lore dealing with settlement, mining and railroading to the practical crafts and arts of the farm, ranch, and household. The Life Collection at Utah State is one of the largest holding of original folklore in the American West. The conference will be held August 5 it in Logan. fees are $65. .00 and credit fees are $70.00. Both fees include the special workshop fee for admission to all events of the Festival of the American West including the Great West Fair, The Historical Pageant, The Great West Cookout, and Sheepherdera Luncheon at the Jensen Historical Farm. Three credits are available in English or History. Registration should be completed by July 28, 1977. With the addition of new courts in Roosevelt, Duchesne, and Vernal, tennis is fast becoming very popular and last years UBIC Tennis Tournament was the largest tennis tournament held in the area. New age classes have been added to this years tournament to stimulate larger youth participation. Tournament events are: Boys Singles (up to and including age 17), Girls Singles . (up to and including age 17), Womens Singles (ages 18 and up), Mixed Doubles (any age), Men's Doubles (any age), Men's Singles (ages 18 and up). Entry fee will be $3 per event Tournament entry forms may be picked up at the Utah State University Extension offices in Roosevelt Duchesne, and Vernal or at Bump's Western Wear or Smiley's Sporting Goods (both in Roosevelt). All entry forms and entrance fees must be turned in to John Paul Murphy at the USU Extension office in Roosevelt before 5 p.m. on Friday, July 29. Entries will not be accepted after Friday. Commission Executive Secretary Eueda Stevenson said the warning follows in the wake of a July 1, 1977, Attorney General's opinion holding that any lottery scheme violates Utah criminal statutes and if used to promote a business may also be considered as unfair method of competition.
