May 14. Fishing will begin at 5 a.m. and will he legal until 10 p.tn. (4 a.m. to 9 p.m. Mountain Standard Time when in effect) in all waters of the state except where otherwise specified in the 1977 Ashing and protected aquatic wildlife proclamation. The earlier opening date applies only to t he general fishing season opening date. Waters with special opening dates will remain t he same. The Wildlife Board approved the earlier opening date and granted authority to the Division of Wildlife Resources to set the 1977 season opener on either May 14 or 21. dependent on the Division's ability to provide and plant Ash prior to the determined date. After careful evaluation of available man power requirements and hatchery conditions throughout the state, Don Smith, director of the Division of Wildlife Resources, and Donald Andriano, chief of Fisheries, established the May 14 opening. Director Smith said. "We have attempted to maintain a consistency in the opening of our fishing season the last several years and have set aside the Saturday rlosest to June 1 as that day. This year, however, both the Wildlife Board and the Division felt it best, under present circumstances, to move the opening date ahead to take advantage of current water conditions." Smith continued. We realize that this change may cause some hardships on resort owners and sportsmen who have planned vacation time around Ashing season. The Vernal Ranger District will plant fourteen thousand trees this year, nine thousand are lodgepole pine andjive thousand Engcl-maspruce. These trees are a two year old nursery slock that have been shipped hy refrigerated van from the Lucky Peak Nursery in Boise, Idaho, and the Coeur D'Alene Nursery in Ciwur D'Alene Idaho. They arrived in Vernal on April 8th, and were quickly placed in storage with rare being taken not to expose the tret's to sudden temperature changes or outside air. Usually the Forest Service stores Ihe I roes in snow hanks, and cover the snowbank with six to eight inches of sawdust. This year however, there was not enough snow for storing the trees.
