Show 16 STANDARD Moy 30, 1974 Biggest Ever crowd expected for Utahs fish opening Roads jammed with campers, boats, vehicles of all descriptions. Kids digging for worms. Tents going up and campers parked in previously empty spots. That's what it will be like in Utah next Saturday, the opening for 1974's fishing season. Every major reservoir will look more like a sea of people than water. Numbers don't seem to matter, however. Fishing season is here, and nary an angler will be left at home. The Division of Wildlife Resources has storked the waters. All that is needed is the right touch to pull in one of those tasty trout. Assistant Fisheries Chief Bill Tate reminds fishermen that the division does not, however, stock, those streams that are high and riley from the spring run-of- f. "Any area posted no trespassing or 'no fishing1 will not be stocked with hatchery trout," he declared. Anglers are reminded to obtain permission from landowners before venturing onto their land, whether posted or not Camping and picnic sites should leave no reminder of their human visitors. Fishermen with children are advised to fish in reservoirs or more gentle flowing streams. "High fast rivers are just too hazardous for young children to try their fishing luck on, warned Tate. "Utah has plenty of lakes and reservoirs which lend themselves to family outings." The department listed the following forecasts and stream conditions for this area: Starvation Reservoir, this water is a relatively new impoundment and fishing has been very good in years past. This year the reservoir is being drawn down for repair on the bridge so fishing should be extra fast while they are concentrated. There is a good potential of catching some large brown and cutthroat trout in this water. Improved campgrounds are available. Red Creek Reservoir, This water opens with the general season this year (June 1.) Recent surveys on the reservoir showed several large cutthroat trout about 23 inches in length. This water is stocked with several hundred rainbow catchables prior to the opener. No improved campgrounds available. Big Sandwash Reservoir, This water always provides a good fishing experience on the opener. Most fish caught exceed a foot in length with best success from boats. Steinaker reservoir. Boat fishermen are usually more successful on this water with a catch of fish averaging 12 inches in length. Improved campgrounds are available. Moon Lake, This water is located in the high country but is accessible for the opener. It should provide a good fishery for rainbow, brown, cutthroat, and brook trout. The water will receive a good plant of rainbow catchables prior to the opener. Improved campgrounds are available. Lake Fork River, This river is controlled by Moon Lake, so it should be clear and provide good fishing for brown, cutthroat and rainbow. It has been stocked with rainbow catchables. North Fork Duchesne River, This stream usually runs high for the opener. It is usually pretty clear and fishing should be good. Albino rainbow trout will again be stocked with the normal strain of rainbow, so a nice variety will be offered. There are excellent camping areas along the river providing a rewarding experience for the angler. Duchesne River, This water is unique in that it is classified a wildfish stream. No catchables are stocked enabling the streambred fish to have a chance to flourish. Species include brown trout, cutthroat trout and white fish. This stream entices the experienced fisherman because the challenge is too great for the ordinary fisherman. Pelican Lake, this lake is open all year. ner is July 1. Check the proclamation for the regulations. Currant Creek, This stream may receive catchable trout before it opens on July 1. Cutthroat trout are common, especially in the beaver ponds, and there is always a chance for a big brown. West Fork Duchesne River, This river opens July 1 and provides some good cutthroat and brown trout fishing. Pole Creek Lake, This lake will be accessible for the opening weekend and will be stocked with catchables prim to the opening. Paradise Reservoir, This reservoir provides some good fishing. It will be accessible on June 1 and will be stocked with rainbow catchables for the opener. Uinta River, This river is expected to be high and slightly turbid for the opener. Rainbow trout will be stocked for the opening weekend and some good brook and cutthroat trout fishing is in store for the angler later in the summer. Whiterocks River, some good fishing for cutthroat and brook trout will be found on this river. It is also a wildfish stream, and catchables are not stocked. High water is expected for the opener, but fishing in the summer and through the season is excellent aU but still receives a lair amount of pressure on the opening weekend. The bass and bluegili fishery is excellent. The lake is classed among the top in the state for providing fun for the fisherman. Flaming Gorge Reservoir, This water is also open to year round fishing, but a large crowd is expected on the opener. Fishing has been relatively slow prior to the opener but is expected to improve as the weather improves. Several campgrounds and services are available. Yellowstone River, the high runoff will probably render this stream high and turbid presenting a problem for fishermen on the opener. It will be stocked with rainbow catchables as soon as the water clears up. Some large brown trout are in the stream as well as cutthroat, brook and whitefish, providing a wide variety for the angler. Rock Creek, Rainbow catchables will be stocked for the opening. This stream produces some of the largest brown trout in this region, but it is expected to be high and murky on the opener. Strawberry River, This is the "quality fishing stream" in this region and provides some excellent fly fishing for experienced fishermen. This stream's ope Duchesne lists Little League Summer work project provides jobs for youth Gearing Fire trails, removing and clearing slash for fall burning, repair and maintenance of Forestry equipment, thinning trees, in forest areas, planting grass in designated areas and laying a culinary water system in the Big Springs area.
