Then came six more quick points and a stunned team of Eagles lost the game. Dejected Eagle coach Russ Shirts sat almost unbelieving on his bench. All night long his underdog Eagles had refused to call it quits. Down several times by 11 points, each time they maintained their poise and in the fourth quarter finally grabbed the lead. Then came the stampede. For Altamont it was not one of their better night, the Eagles held high scoring Gary Stringham to only 21 points, one of his lowest during the entire year. To top it oft the Longhorns never were able to shake the pesky Eagles. Only in the final minute did they show why they are ranked number three in the state class. A jackpot rodeo is being sponsored by the Provo area U. S. Navy and U. S. Naval Reserve Recruiters on behalf of the South Utah County high school rodeo dub. Starting time is 7:30 p.m., with an antidpated special slack to begin earlier in the day. The events will include bareback, saddle bronc, bull riding, team roping, calf roping and steer wrestling. For the ladies there will be barrels, pole bending and goat tying. Entry fee is $15.00 for the mens events and $5.00 for the ladies, with the exception of the team roping which will be $12.50 per person. Stock will be furnished by Circle J" Rodeo Company. The books will be open on January 16, 17 and 18. Fees must be paid by the 18th of January. Spectator seats are $1.50 for adults and 75 cents for students. All proceeds will go to the South Utah County high school rodeo club. Trophies, in addition to cash prizes, will be awarded to 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners. A horse blanket will be awarded to the all around cowboy and cowgirl. If it's scoring you want, Altamont averages 90 points per game, Gary Stringham was the leading scorer in the state, until this week, and two other players, Bruce Todd and Joe Fieldsted are among the top scorers in the league. Gary Stringham led all Longhorn scorers with 21 points, next was Bruce Todd who also was credited with 14 assists, Joe Fieldsted dropped in 16 points, and Reed Wardle hit for 14 points, grabbed 11 rebounds, and blocked six Eagle shots (once three times in a row). Hero for the Eagles was Mark Hall with 31 points, including 13 of 15 free throws. Chipping in key baskets in the Duchesne drive also were Marlyn Grant with 16, Ted Telisak with 10 and Kent Brown with 15. As a team the Eagles hit 72 from the charity stripe compared with 65 for the Longhorns. Altamont however made up for that deficit from the field outscoring Duchesne. This week Altamont has a breather, taking on East Carbon on the Viking court. Duchesne, on the other hand, hosts favorite Monticello and must prove that its early season blasting of the Bucks was no fluke. If the Eagles win they will stay right on the heels of the Longhorns and almost clinch a state playoff berth (practically, not pre-seas- unidentified Union shooter fakes out a Morgan eager last week. went on to defeat the Cougars 55-4and take first place in Region Morgan Nine. Guardian, whose wife Jackie is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Ames, all of Roosevelt, was promoted to his present rank while serving at the' Marine Corps Base in Camp Pendleton, Calif. Union managed to take the game in hand in second half play, but was never able to take the lead. The third quarter ended with Morgan ahead and the game ending score was 55-4Both teams were without key players, Morgan was mising 6 center Scot Whit-tie- r and Union had 4 forward Tom Monks out with a bad knee. Pacing the Union attack was Scott 39-3- 1 6-- 6-- Kowallis with 11, Roger Dart with 10 and Russel Iorg with nine points. Hitting 15 of 19 free throw attempts kept the Cougars in the game, but with only 17 field hits compared to 21 for the Trojans the Union team was not able to pull off a victory. Friday the Cougars will have an opportunity to redeem themselves and stay in contention for the region title when Wasatch. they take on region The surprising Heber team will be tough as they average 74 points per game and have allowed opponents (in league play) only 53 points per game. Tabby had another disappointing game, Monticello, badly needing a victory to keep pace yith Altamont and Duchesne, mowed the Tigers down. Gary Stringham, Altamont, continues to lead Region ten in scoring, but by a reduced margin following last week's cage action. Mark Hall, Duchesne moved up to second in weekly statistics. Stringham is averaging 27 pants per game (ppg), down from last week's 29 ppg figure. He also fell from first to fourth in the overall state scoring race. Hall with a 31 point outburst against Altamont jumped from third to second high scorer in the region and from 23.3 ppg to 24.8 ppg. He is the eighth leading scorer in the state. Joe Fieldsted, Altamont, is now averaging 19 ppg down from 20 ppg last week and also dropped from fourth to fifth in scoring. Bruce Todd, Altamont, slipped from 16.3 ppg to 15.7 ppg and from eighth to tenth scorer. Ervan Rhoades of the Tabiona Tiger averaged 15.6 ppg last week and was down to 15 ppg this week and from ninth to twelfth scorer. Kent Brown, Duchesne, eleventh in scoring 1st week with a 14 maintained that average but nonetheless fell to fourteenth in the scoring derby.
