The tax is now nearly 12 percent, and will continue to rise to an estimated 25 percent to. 30 percent by the end. of the century.' The maximum tax is now $1,800 per year, and will 'continue rising to near $7,300 by the end of the century. Along with wages, Social Security payments are now on the escalator. Under this double escalator system, some .retirees may soon be drawing more in Social Security than they formerly earned in wages. Some water might be squeezed out of the system, but there is only one way to stop the' growth of this cancer lengthen the working span. Most workers retire at 65, many at 62. By postponing retirement to 70 or 72, the payout would be reduced some $7 billion or $8 billion a year, while the income would be increased by a similar amount. At present, the payout exceeds the income by about $4 billion a. year. If the above adjustment were made, income and outgo would hot only balance, but a surplus of some $10 billion to $12 billion a year could be added to the Social Security trust fund, insuring its solvency for many years to come. ' Most people could work on to 70. Exceptions could' be made for those who lack the physical strength. For most, it would not be a hardship. Until recently, few people thought of retiring at 65. In my youth, it was unheard of. People worked as long as they were able. No one thought of retiring except for illness or failing strength. I believe most workers would prefer to work a few extra years, and be sure of their Social Security retirement payments, rather than retire early and face uncertainty. The whole, scheme, of course, is unsound. It absorbs most of the money our people could save, and transfers it from building up our capital assets (to finance further production and supply more jobs) and instead channels it into consumption. Eventually, this will decapitalize our country. Everyone who will set up his own retirement plan and pay into it the equivalent of the Social Security. family, and country.
