A letter had been sent to Lynn liom Lowell some time before in which Lynn had speculated that Lowell's division soon would be headed lor France. Lynn thought since he had been overseas a sufficient time, he should be able to get a pass and he'd try to find his brother Allhough the odds were heavy against it. Lynn was determined to give it a try. "I distinctly remember the bitter cold morning ol December 18," y nn said, "as I trudged through the snow to the headquarters office ol the Gourock Naval Base. I tequested and was granted a seven-da- y leave, but counting ahead, I leahed it I left then I would have to return on the evening of the 24th, Christmas Eve. Lowells outfit was on alert and he could not leave the army camp. An effort was made by Lowell to get a two-da- y pass from his commander so he could ride at least half the way back to Glascow with Lynn. They were told orders had come from headquarters that no O passes were to be ssvaX given. Lynn had pre- " pared to leave Christmas together As Lynn headed back to his barracks, he telt an impression not to wait He hesitated only briefly, returned to the office, picked up his pass and headed out to locate his brother. First, it was to the Glasgow airport riding in the back of a mail then to truck, London on a 7 n- ,- C-4- V the next morning when a mira- cle occurred. Heres Lowells report: v Later that night the supply officer walked up to us. He had overheard transport with a group of German war prisoners. In London, Lynn contacted the Red Cross office and learned that General Kramer's 66th division was somewhere in the south "I reasoned they weie prepared to embark tor Trance because ot the intense fighting reported there." Lynn lecalls. I boarded a train tor Southampton, spent the night there with a navy buddy, Joe Hardin, who was assigned to the Fleet Post Office. I was joyfully excited (the next morning) when I discovered a number of soldiers wearing the Black Panther shoulder patch of the 264th regiment, Lowell's outfit They told me their located division was at Hak Lynn and me asking the camp commander for a pass and being refused. The next day he had to go to Birmingham, England, which was halfway to Scotland, to pick up radio supplies. He (the supply officer) offered to let me go along as part of the detail to pick up LYNN JENKINS LOWELL JENKINS CHARLES JENKINS, JR. these supplies. When Lynn and Lowell said goodbye in Birmingham, Lynns parting words were: Liye the gospel and if its God's will, you will come out safely. Lowell and his compatriots returned from Birmingham to their base and found a completely deserted camp. We were hungry so we went to the mess hall, and found it empty also, Lowell remembers. All the Christmas turkeys were laying on the table ready to cook. It was apparent my outfit left in a hurry." At division headquarters, 30 miles away, Lowell and his friends first learned what had happened. Their regiment had boarded two at and ships Weymouth Southhampton on Dec. 23, and were on their way to France to help hold the German offensive in the famous Battle of the Bulge. My company boarded the Belgian transport Leopoldville and headed for Cherbourg, France, said Lowell. The H.M.S Leopoldville was moving into a convoy accompanied by two British escort destroyers and, as the historical record indicates, was "nearing the end of its army buddies. Stars and Stripes.
