Show page Davis County Clipper B2 Tuesday, December 17, 1996 Phoenix Suns snap Jazz win streak Randy Hendricks Sports Writer Of the first 21 games of the NBA season, the Utah Jazz played 15 at home. To polish off the final week of their homework, the Jazz had a "loser and a snooz-e- r. They now' hit the road for five games in seven nights with a chance to prove their 18- -3 record, the best mark through 21 games in franchise history, is no fluke. The Jazz had their record win streak snapped at 15 games Thursday when they hosted the Phoenix Suns, then redeemed themselves with total domination of Orlando Saturday. The best precious Jazz record through 21 games was 14-- 7 accomplished fie times including last season. Saturday, Dec. 14 Jazz 101, Orlando Magic 68 After suffering their first loss since Nov. 9 Thursday against Phoenix, the Jazz came out with renewed vigor against the crippled Orlando Magic. This Magic team is a shadow of the Eastern Conference juggernaut of seasons past. Gone is Shaquille O'Neal to the Lakers, and out due to injuries are Anfernee Hardaway and Nick Anderson. In fact, Orlando media notes list the Magic "regular starting five as Anderson, Horace Grant, Ronny Seikaly, Dennis Scott and Hardaway. Of that quintet, only Grant, Scott and Seikaly were able to start for Orlando Saturday with Scott just recently off the injured list. The Jazz took advantage early and often. The Jazz outscored the Magic in every quarter, and started the second half with a 13- -0 run which knocked out the visitors. A big factor for the Jazz was a Dec. 6 a -14 record, numerous new faces, injuries to key personnel and a coaching change. Against the Suns, the Jazz explosion sort of fizzled. Like a football team that shows up to play on a soggy field with the wrong shoes, the Jazz seemed hampered against the Suns. They were slow to loose balls, out of position on rebounds and a step late on defense. The Jazz overcame a 10 point lead in the third period to lead by one point going into the final quarter, but it wasnt enough. Their performance against the Jazz showed why theyve turned things around. Phoenix has talent and great depth. The Suns can bring players like Sam Cassell, Robert Horry, Rex Chapman and Danny Manning off the bench. Against Utah, the Suns bench outscored the Jazz reserves 54-1- 2. In fact, neither the leading scorer (Cassell) nor the leading rebounder (Manning) started the game. And with the game on the line, Phoenix got outstanding performances from Cassell, Chapman and Manning. In the final period, the Suns outscored Utah 30-2- 1, hit eight of 16 shots from the field, hit all 12 free throws they attempted and outrebounded the home team 10-- 7. Every time the Jazz applied pressure, Phoenix responded. The game was tied at 83 with 1:48 to go in the game, but a slam by Mark Bryant and free throws by Cassell (four) and Chapman (six), were countered by one Jeff Hornacek layup and two John Stockton free throws. It wasn't a flukey win, said Chapman following the game. "We played really good defense. We went to the boards. These are not your average bench players. We have 10 or 12 guys who can start in this league. We all have to be ready when called upon.
