About anything can become toxic waste By DENNIS HINKAMP Anything can be toxic and almost anything can become hazardous waste. There are documented cases of people killing themselves by drinking too much water. Salad dressing and even Utahs favorite dessert, Jell-in large amounts are potentially hazardous wastes. Howard Deer, Extension toxicologist at Utah State University, recalls an incident in Minnesota when a truck load of catsup overturned on a highway and was considered a toxic spill. Sure, there were lots of jokes about sending in a truck full of French fries to clean up the catsup spill, but it was serious. The spill was near a river. Had all the catsup worked its way into the river, the acidity in the catsup would have been enough to kill the fish, Deer says. Likewise, a large amount of salad dressing contains enough oil to be considered hazardous waste, he says. Hazardous doesnt always mean radioactive or that it will kill people on contact. The hazard may be to the municipal water treatment facility or to rivers and lakes. Deer says the Jell-- occurred when some example 0 Jell-- 0 wrestling promoters attempted to flush their attraction down a storm sewer without the citys permission. The average citizen has probably gotten the idea that you shouldnt pour motor oil down the drain or on the ground, but in the toxic home there are dozens of other household products that are hazardous to the environment and water treatment plants, Deer says. Most consumers dont know where to go with household hazardous waste. Out of frustration, often they just dump it down the drain or In show rooms, a conference room, and new offices for storage and filing. Menlove officials believe that the new customer lounge and additional space about double what was available before expansion will go a long way toward ensuring customer satisfaction. the regular trash pickup, he says. To help prevent this, county health departments have started sponsoring hazardous waste days, according to Dorthy Adams, waste minimization specialist for the Salt Lake County Health Department. This allows everyone to bring suspected hazardous waste into a central location. This may include paint, solvents, pesticides and all types of car and household batteries. So far she says there are only three such programs in Utah: Salt Lake County, WeberMorgan Counties and Tooele County. The number of collection days per year is limited by funding. Unfortunately, a very successful collection day could wipe out most of the years budget. The collection days are limited to household wastes. There are separate programs for businesses and farmers, she says. Rather than rely on hazardous waste collection days, we encourage consumers to buy and use their haz- ardous waste cautiously, Adams says. The best way to reduce hazardous waste disposal is to buy only as much as you can use in a reasonable amount of time. If you have leftovers try to give them to someone who can use them. She says it is not illegal for to dispose of most home hazardous waste in the regular trash pick up, but she encourages them to be responsible by putting the waste in sealed containers before it is discarded or to wait for a collection day. home-owne- rs If you have specific questions about disposal of home hazardous waste, call your county health depart- - Depression is not a natural part of aging.
