Show ' N Utah Outdoors By Mike Hemingway spent last week getting my son ready for his first hunt. Then Saturday morning I probably ruined hunting for him, for the rest of his life. If he thinks hunting is like his first time out, he will never again be satisfied. Hunting never works out the way it did Saturday morning. We decided to hunt for deer on the shores of Strawberry Reservoir. The hunt forecast was so bleak, that I took the boat along so we could do a little fishing if the hunting was too slow. Strawberry was fogged in when we launched the boat, but with the help of a compass and a little luck, we finally made it to our destination. After dropping off the other members of our party along the shore, and arranging to meet later in the morning, I took the boat down the lake and pulled in at the foot of a ridge. We left the boat in the hands of Tim, who wanted to fish and is too young to hunt, and began our expedi- I tion. Mark and I hiked up a fairly easy ridge. As the fog was clearing, we jumped out a couple of does. Things looked promising. Near the top of the ridge, I heard some shots coming from the far side. I suggested to Mark that we sit down and wait to see if a deer would come over the ridge. After about five minutes we heard some rustling in the leaves and out stepped a deer. It walked into the clearing and turned broadside. It is a buck Mark whispered. Through my binoculars, I carefully checked out its head and saw a set of forked horns slicking above its ears. Its a buck, Mark. Take if I waited and waited and waited for Mark to shoot. The deer scanned the ridge, turned and checked the trees. Shoot it Mark I whispered emphatically. Still no shot Finally the buck stepped into the trees. he I turned to Mark and asked him why a shot. He said that hadnt taken when looking through the scope he hadnt been able to get the whole lens Tough way to get of light. I explained that if he could see the deer and the cross hairs, he full could shoot. Now you tell me, he moaned. I glassed the grove of trees and found the deer standing, watching in our direction. I told Mark to stay put while I walked over to the side of the ridge. I told him I was going to walk up to the trees, and when I got near the trees the deer would come out and most likely head toward him. If he was ready, he might get a shot. It happened just as we had planned. I walked to the trees, the deer ran out, and by making a difficult shot, Mark filled his tag with his first deer, a fat two-poi- nt buck. After cleaning the deer, we dragged it to the boat. The whole process took no more than an hour from the time we left the boat until the time we had the deer back to the shore. started hunt decided to go fishing. At times, the ramp had six trailers across loading and unloading. I havent got a clue where you will find the deer. Mark took the only buck that was seen by our party. There were far fewer deer in the area than we have seen in the past and there were far fewer hunters. Perhaps that is why the deer weren't moving around. With the hunt ending Friday night, it just might be time to fit in one last fishing trip. You will probably have more luck with the fish than with the deer, unless you happen to be a first time hunter with a great guide and a ton of luck. Heart In all of my years of hunting, an opening morning, I .have never had a buck walk out on a hill and stand broadside. I have never been so close to the vehicle after I have downed my game. I have never had a deer cooperate with a plan to push it out of the brush. A hunt never happens like this. That is why I am afraid that Mark is ruined as a hunter. Now he thinks there is nothing difficult about getting a deer. Perhaps he will leant different in the to future. Heart At the boat Tim had lost his fish hook, so we reeled in and cruised down the lake to meet the other hunters we dropped off. While waiting we fished and ate lunch. I hooked several beautiful rainbows and Tim ended up landing a 17 inch cutthroat, which is the biggest fish he has ever taken. Not only was the hunting good but the fishing was great, as Tim can attest. It was a fun combination hunting and fishing trip. If you want to try your hand at fishing, we found the rainbows at the edge of the weeds. Both the rainbows and the cutthroats readily took Berkley Power Bait. We were using fluorescent orange on a three foot leader with a slip sinker. United Vlfay 1993 Goal The boat ramps at Strawberry were very busy last Saturday.
