Show DAVIS COUNTY CLIPPER Tuesday, September 14. 1993 B1 1 i! PORTS I, 1, t, -- THIS WEEK- - Bountiful blasts Woods Cross, 17-- 0 By DIRK FACER Sports Editor BOUNTIFUL Make room, Mr. Detmer. Here comes Jon Benson. The Bountiful High running racked up 245 yards rushing on 26 carries to lead the Braves to a convincing 17-- 0 presca-so-n victory over rival Woods Cross Friday. We made that Benson kid look like a Heisman Trophy winner, said Woods Cross coach John Haning. Hes a good player, but tonight he was a great player. However, he was hardly a one-ma- n show. The Braves forced numerous turnovers and kept the Cats on a short leash all night long. We played well. I was real happy. That was Bountiful football, Bountiful coach Larry Wall. said I was real proud in terms of our intensity and desire. Indeed, the Braves not only managed e to halt Woods Cross winning streak, they also did a number on the powerful Wildcat running attack. Bountiful limited the states leading rusher Bryan Pace and his teammates to just 56 yards on the ground. They shut us down. They outplayed us. Theres no story, said Haning. They beat us fair and square. We just didnt play well and they did. However, it wasnt easy according to Fridays hero. It was a cat fight out there. It was tough, said Benson. It was real emotional. Everyone was psyched out there. As for the running war, Benson said: Were noted for Bountiful football. We were pretty psyched to stop (Pace) and our line was opening up some big holes for me. Simply put, the turnover-plague- d night belonged to Bountiful. Despite a fumble on its first possession, Bountiful recovered after limiting the Wildcats to three plays and a punt. Enter Benson. The junior runner, who had over 1 00 yards rushing in the first six minutes of the game, took the ball on second down and dashed 65 yards for paydirt. The kick touchdown and ensuing point-aftby Brad Haslam gave the Braves a 0 advantage with 5:56 remaining in the first quarter. (Benson) came to play, Wall said. One guy isnt going to knock him down. He has a lot of desire. He was superb. I cant say enough about him. Trailing 7-- 0, Woods Cross mounted a serious drive late in the quarter. two-gam- Playing for keeps school Region high volleyball begins Tuesday n Clipper Country with three teams in action. Quarterback Heath Davis, filling in for regular starter Jesse Malmrose who was sidelined with a rib injury, moved the Wildcats deep into Bountiful territory. The deficit stood firm, though Haslam came to making it 13-- 0 but his field goal attempt hit the crossbar early in the third quarter, until Benson once again took charge. However, it took another Woods Cross turnover to get it going. Brock Beattie scooped up a Wildcat fumble near midfield to give Bountiful decent field position. Three plays later, Benson galloped 35 yards for a touchdown with 3:12 left in the third stanza. Haslams PAT created the games final margin. Down the stretch. Woods Cross never cut into the 17-- 0 deficit despite recovering a Bountiful fumble and forcing the Braves into a loss on downs in the final ' ' 12 minutes.
