Show A8 DAVIS COUNTY CLIPPER Tuesday, September 14, 1993 Your Community Connection heips locai victims of violence In recent months an outcry has erupted from Davis County residents over the need for a Battered Women's Shelter and support services for victims of domestic violence and sexual assault in Davis County...insinuating that there are no services currently provided. While the domestic violence situation in Davis County is a vital concern, the fact remains that services have been, and currently are being provided to Davis County residents by Your Community Connection of (YCC) OgdenNorthem Utah. Victims of domestic violence in Davis County may seek shelter service at the YCC's Women's Crisis Center in Ogden or at the YWCA in Salt Lake City. Many of these individuals actually travel a shorter distance to reach the corresponding shelter, as others in similar situations in the Salt Lake City area do. Other direct services are available in Davis County through YCC's Davis County Outreach Center in Layton, currently located at the Layton City Community Center at 445 Wasatch Drive, next door to the Layton City Police Department. Short-tercounseling and group services are provided by a licensed Social-ServiWorker employed by m ce YCC. Funding has been provided by Davis County United Way to provide these services not only to victims of domestic violence but also to survivors of sexual assault. YCC's Davis County Outreach Center is open five days per week, services are provided free of charge, and day care is provided for counseling sessions and groups. Scheduled hours for YCC's Davis County Outreach Center are: Monday and Tuesday p.m., 1- -5 Wednesday and Thursday 9 p.m. and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Friday. Group counseling is available on a 5-- regular basis. The Victims of Domestic Violence Group meets each Wednesday evening at 7 p.m. and the Self-Hel- p Group for Sexual Assault Survivors is held every Thursday at 7 p.m. The Social Service Worker is also available by appointment to assist with filling out paperwork for Protective Orders, and will help both victims of domestic violence and survivors Reparation Application Forms. Any woman needing immediate assistance can call YCCs 24-ho- ur 3 or hotline at In addition to the crisis services 451-174- Support Group alternate Tuesdays from 5:30-6:3- 0 p.m. A MELD Young Moms Program, which offers support and training to moms in their teen or early twenties, is held at the Young Parents School, 264 S. 500 E. in Kaysville, each Tuesday from 8 p.m., dinner and child care are provided to those attending. A Davis County MELD Young Dads Program is planned for this fall. (Both MELD programs are currently offered in Ogden.) In 1992 YCC, through the Davis County Outreach Center, counseled 37 women who have been abused by their partners and 27 survivors of sexual assault. The YCCs Women's Crisis Center housed 132 abused women and children residents of Davis County, and 61 homeless women and children from Davis County in the shelter in 1992. Square dance class set The Moonlighters Square Dance Club, Bountiful, has announced a New Dancers1 square dance class, starting Oct. 1, at the Bountiful Community Church, 100 N. 400 E. Start time is 7 p.m., with class instruction to continue until 8:30 p.m. The class will be held each Friday at the same time in the same 4 place, throughout the season. Don Carlton, a veteran square dance caller, and the Moonlighters' regular caller, will be the instructors. Following each class session, the Moonlighters will hold their usual Friday night '93-'9- dance, which will continue until 10 p.m. The class will feature the basic and mainstream movements, which are learned at this level of square Programs to help visually impaired dancers' terminology, will be present at each class to help the new dancers learn the various calls and routines to be presented as the class progresses. The first two class sessions will be free. Thereafter, a donation of $5 per session will be requested from each couple. Enrollment will be closed after completion of the third session. During sessions, family members may experience vision loss by wearing goggles that simulate various eye conditions.
