The largest Austrian pine in the United States is located at the corner of 4500 South and Holladay Boulevard, Salt Lake County. It has been the center of a controversy over relocating the intersection. Last year, the pine was declared a Heritage Tree by the Utah Division of Stand Lands and Forestry and is now protected by state law. Students from Olympus Junior High School have adopted the 135 year-ol- d champion, along with several other trees on the corner, to create a community park. American Forests also declared a Rocky Mountain white fir growing in the Uintah National Forest south of Payson in Loafer Canyon the largest of its kind in the United States. Based on the accounts of pioneers, it could be several hundred years old. "American Forests keep a national register for the biggest trees in the United States," said Tony Dietz, state urban forester with the Division of State Lands and Forestry. Utah also has a state register of trees. Utah now has seven trees on the national register. Other national champions growing in Utah are the Jardine juniper in Logan Canyon, Utah juniper near Tabiona, limber pine near Pittsburgh Lake in American Fork Canyon, blue spruce south of Duchesne and Pringle manzanita in Washington County. Each farmer and rancher in the U.S. now feeds nearly 100 persons and the merging technologies would indicate that our future looks bright for expanding this milestone. "As we mark this 50th anniversary of National Farm Safety and Health Week, every Utah citizen should stop for a moment and recognize the dedication which our farmers and ranchers make each day to the strength and welfare of our nation," said Ken Ashby, Delta, Utah Farm Bureau President. "Their emotional, economic and environmental success and hardships should not go unnoticed by our Utahns, who benefit so abundantly from their efforts." Utah Farm Bureau News A SNOWBIRD - Tracy Aviary will be having the sixth annual Hawks Watch this fall at Snowbird's Hidden Peak. This is the perfect opportunity for bird watchers and nature enthusiasts to see some of the most spectacular bird sightings in Utah. The Hawk Watch began six years ago after tram operators reported the large number of birds of prey that gather in the fall, in preparation for their winter migration. The Hawk Watch begins with a presentation explaining hawk migrations and how to identify the birds likely to be seen. The presentation includes a slide show along with some of the aviary's own birds. Alter the presentation, there will be a tram ride to Hidden Peak to watch birds for a half hour to an hour, depending on the amount of birds there. 1 entrance. In June the Bountiful City Council agreed to loan the Wight House $60,000 from its revolving loan program for the renovation project at the downtown business. The council voted to give the Wight House the $60,000 on a loan period at a 6 percent interest rate. The Wight House sought the funds for a planned expansion of the locally owned clothing store. In February the Wight House asked the Bountiful RDA for 10-ye- ar $100,000 from the revenues received from the sale of the downtown property for a new post office. At that time the board took the request under advisement. The $60,000 loaned to the Wight House comes from an existing city revolving fund and not from the newly acquired funds from the U.S. Postal Service sale. Peace This will be followed by a nature hike down the mountain. The tram will be available for those who don't wish to hike. Those who participate should bring their own food and water, along with a good pair of hiking shoes. Binoculars and bird books are also valuable items to carry. The excursions will take place on Saturdays with lectures beginning at 9:30 a.m. The Hawk Watch will take the place on Sept. 18, Sept. 25, and Oct. 2. Tickets may be purchased at Tracy Aviary at $ 15 each for the public, and $ 3 each for Tracy Aviary members. Magna Times e 1 Watched crop instead of shale?
