Show DAVIS COUNTY CLIPPER A3 Tuesday, September 14, 1993 Centennial garden gets $1,000 donation By PAUL CHALLIS News Editor The City BOUNTIFUL Council has agreed to donate $1,000 for the construction of a native plant centennial garden to be located on the northwest corner of the Golden Years Senior Citizens Center. The donation has one stipulation that matching funds can come from the state and Davis County. The money will come from the city's recycling fund and won't be funded at taxpayers expense. According to Councilman Les Foy, the deadline for applying for state funding for the garden project Boom A-- and the lake, he noted. Land that is not now at a premium soon will be. Unemployment nationally is seven percent, he said. In Utah, the figure fluctuates between four and five percent. Countys population is 190,709. By 2015, the number of Davis County residents is expected to be over 301,000, a 58 percent increase. As available land in Salt Lake County continues to shrink, more people are turning to Davis County. McDaniel expects Daviss growth rate to surpass Salt Lakes within the near future. I would approve if it f continue to press for a college campus in Davis County at this time. They .began to explore other ways to meet the critical needs of students in Davis County. Statistics have proven that for over 20 years Davis County has exceeded the practical requirements to qualify for a community college. In 1993 over 3,000 students was arrested and charged with assaulting a police officer, intoxication and criminal mischief. The suspect is being charged with assault for hurling a beer bottle at officers, who were there responding to a report of a family fight. The garden would celebrate Utah's Centennial planned to be commemorated in 1 996. Projections indicate that number will jump to 4,081 in 1996. Armed with that information, coalition members knew, they couldnt give up. They began to search for other ways to serve Davis County residents. It was decided that the next best thing to having their own campus, would be to offer courses at a variety of locations. There he is." Police said Romero was standing there waiting for the officers and spoiling for a fight. He had a beer in one hand and a fork in the other, Ball said. He was threatening the officers and challenging them to come fight him. In addition to the beer in his hand, police report that Romero had drank about a case of beer and had become combative, verbally abusing his girlfriend and throwing beer bottles at the closet doors and elsewhere. It was the suspect's girlfriend who called police. Romero reportedly became even more abusive when told to lay down his weapons, prompting officers to spray him with pepper mace. Officers had no trouble subduing the suspect afterwards, Ball said.
